Rep. Miller on Attacks in Brussels

Statement

Date: March 22, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10), Vice Chair of the House Homeland Security Committee, issued the following statement on today's attacks in Brussels, Belgium:

"First, of course, we want to express our condolences to the families and friends of the victims of today's attacks in Brussels. Our thoughts and prayers are with them during this difficult time. These innocent people were simply going about their lives when they were killed by what appears to be yet another attack coordinated and executed by ISIS.

"This cowardly attack, just like the attacks in Paris and San Bernardino, stem from a perverse ideology that seeks to destroy the liberties of free societies around the world, and it must be stopped. We cannot expect to successfully degrade and destroy an enemy with global reach just by targeting them with airstrikes in the Middle East. We need to do more, especially to protect the home front. Congress needs to pass the Border Security First Act, which passed out of the Committee on Homeland Security last year. We also need to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of our entire visa program. Earlier this year, Congress passed, and the President signed into law, my Visa Waiver Program legislation, which will help prevent terrorists with Western passports from entering the U.S. However, we now need to look at the visa program in its entirety, including visa overstays, fiancé visas, and tourist visas. It is unacceptable to delay these critical initiatives simply because it is an election year. Our principal responsibility is to provide for the security of our country and our citizens."
