Pompeo Condemns Further Financial Concessions to Iran

Congressman Mike Pompeo (R-Kan.) today released the following statement on reports that the Obama administration is attempting to lift additional U.S. financial restrictions on Iran--changing commercial rules to allow the regime unprecedented access to the U.S. dollar:

"It is unconscionable that President Obama is reportedly sidestepping American law with dramatic steps that put U.S. banks at risk and undermine the integrity of the international financial system--all without informing Congress. If our fears are confirmed, Treasury Secretary Jacob Lew's July previous testimony that "Iran…will continue to be denied access to the world's largest financial and commercial markets' will ring entirely hollow. The lifting of further American financial restrictions on Iran means Secretary Lew and other officials either intentionally mislead Congress or the Obama administration and the Iranians are changing the terms of the nuclear deal months after it was finalized. Either scenario is unacceptable.

"Given the serious financial and national security implications of these potential concessions to Iran, the Obama administration must officially brief all national security congressional committees on its plans. As Iran continues to capture American hostages, fire off missiles in violation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231, and fund terrorism around the world, it is clear that this deal is far from the "substantial success,' that the president pretends it is."
