Pittenger Supports Women's Health, Not Planned Parenthood

Statement

Date: Sept. 17, 2015
Location: Washington, D.C.

Today, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) announced his support for an amendment to shift federal funding from Planned Parenthood, whose executives have been seen on video discussing dismembering babies and the possible sale of baby body parts, to the larger and more accessible network of Federally Qualified Health Centers and Rural Health Clinics.

"There are 294 community health centers in North Carolina, but only 9 Planned Parenthood clinics," commented Congressman Pittenger. "Planned Parenthood is concentrated in population centers, while the 294 community health centers are spread throughout North Carolina, including vital coverage in rural and underserved communities. Clearly, it is inappropriate for federal tax dollars to support an organization which dismembers unborn babies, which is why I strongly support efforts to defund Planned Parenthood."

On Friday, the U.S. House of Representatives is expected to vote on legislation to suspend federal funding for Planned Parenthood and shift the entire $235 million to Federally Qualified Health Centers and Rural Health Centers. Nationally, there are 20 community health centers for every Planned Parenthood clinic.
