Issue Position: Federal Minimum Wage

Issue Position

Employer / employee relations are historically local in nature and a legislative matter for states to decide. However, in this new era of too big to fail and mega corporations with all the powers of monopolies in their sector, intuitively, I feel something should be done nationally. When a mega giant like Walmart has employees collecting wages who are still eligible for federal aid, in the form of food stamps and the Affordable Care Act subsidies, something is terribly wrong. This amounts to corporate welfare. We the taxpayer's should not be forced to pad the bottom line of the mega-corporations. In our district, CA 4, a federal minimum wage will make little difference or solve any problems, as California's minimum wage has always outpaced the federal standard. But, if we support our poorer neighbors, when they work for the national and international mega corps, with a living wage and better opportunities we should expect them to rise above the cycle of poverty that plagues us as a nation. This is better for all of us.
