House Votes to Replace "No Child Left Behind," Restore Local Education Control

Statement

Wednesday night, the U.S. House of Representatives passed S. 1177, the "Every Student Succeeds Act," which is the final conference report negotiated by the House and Senate. The legislation replaces "No Child Left Behind" and significantly reduces the federal role in state and local education policy. Rep. Rob Woodall (GA 07) supported the measure and issued the following statement after its passage.

"Today's vote to repeal the punitive mandates of "No Child Left Behind" and replace them with policy that sends decision-making authority back to the folks in the Seventh District is a significant step in the right direction. While it is not the bill I would've written, this legislation initiates commonsense, conservative solutions that -- among other things -- prohibit federal mandates tying funding to the adoption of academic standards, allow states to opt out of federal education programs that don't suit their needs, and promote school choice by strengthening charter and magnet schools. S. 1177 removes the one-size-fits all format of "No Child Left Behind," and moves communities and states back towards their rightful position of crafting local education policy. There is more yet to be done, but the progress of today will lead to the success of tomorrow, and I look forward to continuing that work."
