I am a huge supporter of our military veterans. Our living veterans have courageously served in many wars and battles, including World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War, two wars in Iraq, and the War in Afghanistan. The men and women who have served in our military are liberators, defenders of freedom, and heroes.

America is a great nation because of the ideas and values it was founded on: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. For well over 200 years, our military has fought admirably in defense of these American ideals. Oftentimes the mere presence of our military has brought the peace needed to allow those ideals to flourish.

Unfortunately, defending freedom comes at a high cost. Our veterans selflessly spend months or even years away from their families, and many come home only after grave physical and mental sacrifices. That is why I believe it is vital that America keep its word to those men and women who have sacrificed so much in the defense of our country and our freedoms. As President Theodore Roosevelt said, "[Anyone] who is good enough to shed his blood for his country is good enough to be given a square deal afterward." Our military men and women take care of us by putting their lives on the line, and we likewise should take care of them by providing proper levels of veterans' benefits.
