Sam Graves Opposes Obama's Newest Proposal for Closing Gitmo

U.S. Rep. Sam Graves issued the following statement after President Obama renewed his push to close Guantanamo Bay. The Pentagon recently announced that 13 sites in the U.S. would be considered for relocation of current prisoners -- with Fort Leavenworth in Kansas expected to be among them.

"The President says closing Guantanamo Bay is a matter of national security, but I fail to see how relocating Islamic extremists to U.S. soil makes Americans safer," Rep. Graves said. "It is likely that these terrorists would be transferred to Fort Leavenworth, putting the people of North Missouri and eastern Kansas at serious risk. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I will continue fighting to block and defund the President's misguided plan to close Gitmo, which he is clearly only doing to fulfil a campaign promise."
