Kirk Authors Amendments on Refugee Screening to Protect American Families

Location: Washington, DC

U.S. Senator Mark Kirk (R-Ill.) today announced plans to offer amendments to the American Security Against Foreign Enemies (American SAFE) Act to prevent terrorist infiltration of the Syrian and Iraqi refugee program and strengthen the vetting process for refugees by requiring the screening of applicants for pro-terrorism social media. The Administration currently does not comprehensively screen social media posts of those applying for immigrant visas or for entry into the United States through refugee programs.

"I support the American SAFE Act and further steps to add social media checks to instill confidence that those entering our country don't have terrorist ties," Senator Kirk said.

Screening Social Media Posts to Check for Terrorist Ties

Requires the FBI to screen refugee applicants for pro-terrorism social media, and adds "social media" to the Immigration and Nationality Act so that screening for immigrant visa applicants will include social media profiles and Internet sites.

Notifying Governors of Refugee Resettlements

Requires that governors be notified when a refugee is resettled in their state with respect to name, biometric information, country of origin and prior citizenship.

Prioritizing Immigrant Visas for Translators Aiding U.S. Troops Abroad

Prioritizes the application of special immigrant visas for Iraqi and Afghan translators who helped U.S. and coalition troops overseas, and who also received positive recommendations from Department of Defense or the State Department.
