Chairman Becerra: Tech Giant Becomes Latest Business To Build on its Diversity

Statement

Democratic Caucus Chairman Xavier Becerra (CA-34) released a statement following the announcement that HP Inc. would appoint Aida Alvarez to its board of directors:

"In announcing its appointment of Aida Alvarez to its board of directors, HP Inc. becomes one of the latest examples of a top technology company working to increase its diversity. Alvarez is a great choice for its bench of senior talent -- not because of her background but because of her experience: she is the former administrator of the Small Business Administration and she was the first Latina to hold a U.S. Cabinet-level position.

"It's encouraging that HP Inc. and other technology giants are taking such strides: Dropbox, with its new diversity chief Judy Williams, and companies like Facebook and Google, who have pledged to take new approaches to building a more diverse workforce, are just a few more examples of businesses moving in the right direction.

"In 2013, 70% of Fortune 500 companies did not have a single Latino board member, according to the Latino Corporate Directors Association. That is unacceptable: Latinos make up 20% of the total U.S. population and Latino purchasing power is on track to reach $2.3 trillion by 2020.

"Our diversity makes us stronger as a nation and businesses, just like our cities, must reflect our diverse communities. I hope more businesses take similar steps to prioritize their board and workforce diversity in 2016."
