Congresswoman Hahn Responds to Port of LA's Failure to Enforce Pollution Cutting Measures and Renews Call for Third Party Oversight

Statement

Date: Feb. 3, 2016
Location: Washington, DC

Today, Congresswoman Janice Hahn (CA-44) released the following statement regarding new information that the Port of Los Angeles has failed to meet and enforce pollution cutting measures required at the TraPac terminal. This information comes just months after news that green measures had been rolled back at the China Shipping terminal.

"We now know of two instances in which the Port of Los Angeles failed to adhere to important pollution cutting measures promised to the community. This is a disturbing trend and I hope it is quickly reversed. It is clear that in some cases, financial decisions were allowed to outweigh people and public health. The port's ability to police itself had already been called into question and this latest revelation only affirms the need for third-party oversight. I am calling for the reinstatement of the Port Community Advisory Committee in order to protect public health and begin to restore the trust lost between the community and the port. We never have to choose between good jobs and clean air. We can have both."
