Congressman Alcee L. Hastings (D-FL) released the following statement recognizing the 43rd anniversary of the landmark U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Roe v. Wade:
"Today we mark the anniversary of Roe v. Wade against the backdrop of constant attacks on women's reproductive rights. This ruling, handed down 43 years ago, affords women the right to make their own choices regarding their reproductive healthcare. Yet time and again, my Republican colleagues continue to thumb their noses at this established constitutional right in order to appease to the extreme political agenda of a few members of their party.
"Women have the right to control their bodies and make their own healthcare decisions. The Republicans' obsession with cutting off access to women's healthcare, including continued efforts to defund organizations like Planned Parenthood, is as misguided as it is insulting. Even worse, it endangers the well-being of millions of women.
"As we mark the anniversary of Roe v. Wade, I will proudly continue to oppose any efforts to weaken or eliminate access to women's healthcare providers."
