Congressman Lieu Ecstatic over FDA's Proposed Ban on Tanning Beds for Minors

Statement

Congressman Ted W. Lieu (D | Los Angeles County) has issued the following statement in light of the Food and Drug Administration's proposed rules regulating tanning beds.

"I am thrilled the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) released their proposed rule to ban tanning-bed use for those under the age of 18. This past June, I led a letter, signed by 18 members of Congress, to the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) asking that they release FDA's proposed tanning bed regulations, General and Plastic Surgery Devices: Restriction of Sunlamp Products (RIN 0910-AH14), for public comment as soon as possible.

"For many years, I have led the fight to regulate and restrict ultraviolet tanning bed use, such as authoring the first state law in the nation to ban tanning bed use by minors. Skin cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in the United States and costs $8.1 billion to treat annually. UV tanning beds cause skin cancer. The new rules released by FDA today are critical in the fight to eradicate skin cancer, and I look forward to the rules becoming final."
