Schrader Slams Pricey Tax Extenders Bill

Press Release

Date: Dec. 16, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Citing fiscal recklessness, Congressman Kurt Schrader (OR-05) announced his opposition to the large, unpaid-for tax extenders bill the House will vote on tomorrow. Experts estimate that the bill will cost $650-670 billion over 10 years and has no cost offsets. Schrader, a Co-Chair of the Blue Dog Coalition, released the following statement:

"While these tax extensions individually are good things, there is no way to justify increasing the long-term debt by over $500 billion, especially at the consequence of hurting our kids and grandkids."

"Money is now off the table for important domestic programs like education and healthcare--programs that better the quality of life for the American people and improve their chances at a more prosperous future."

"I cannot, in good conscience, back a package with such a tremendous price tag when that package fails to provide actual predictability or real stability and hurts negotiations for comprehensive tax reform."

"It is unconscionable that Congress would entertain adding hundreds of billions of dollars to our already staggering national debt. The greatest threat to the country that we leave to our children and grandchildren is the national debt."
