Rep. Chu Votes for Long-term Bipartisan Budget Agreement

Statement

Today, Rep. Judy Chu (CA-27), voted with 265 other Democratic and Republican Members of Congress to pass H.R. 1314, a bipartisan budget agreement that would lift sequester spending caps and avoid a default on the U.S. debt for the next two years. Rep. Chu released the following statement:

"Today, I voted to restore smart budgeting and sensible governing. The dangerous sequester, which was never intended to be law in the first place, made arbitrary cuts to our government that denied after school programs to nearly 1.2 million children, prevented more than 4 million meals from being delivered to sick and homebound seniors, and cut more than 30,000 jobs for teachers and school staff. By ending the sequester and raising spending limits, we can finally return to a budget that reflects our priorities. This bipartisan budget will enable investments in education and R&D, and prevents a major increase in Medicare Part B premiums that would have effected millions of seniors in 2016.

"And by raising the debt ceiling, we are putting an end to the dangerous pattern of governing by crisis. The faith and credit of the United States is not a bargaining chip. We have had enough of the irresponsible tactics that bring us to the edge of default only to result in a short term solution. I am pleased that we were able to come together to reach a bipartisan solution that will let us get back to the work of supporting jobs and opportunities for the American people."

H.R. 1314, Bipartisan Budget Act of 2015, will now move to the Senate for passage.
