U.S. Senator Jack Reed today issued the following statement on the passing of former U.S. Senator Fred Thompson (R-TN):

"I am deeply saddened by the death of Fred Thompson. Senator Thompson was larger than life, a movie star and a statesman. I had the opportunity to serve with him and travel with him. He was thoughtful, gregarious, and decent.

"Always a gentleman and someone who cared deeply about public service, he was a strong advocate for the people he represented. Our condolences go out to his family and friends."
