Lujan Statement on Republican Bill that Plans for Default on Nation's Credit

Congressman Ben Ray Luján of New Mexico's Third District released the following statement today after voting against a House Republican bill that prioritizes debt payments.

"With the debt limit looming only a couple short weeks away, House Republicans are playing games with the full faith and credit of the United States. Instead of allowing a clean vote to extend the debt limit and remove any chance of default, House Republicans offered a bill today that would remove the guarantee that the United States will pay all of its bills on time and in full.

"By prioritizing payments, the bill ensures that bondholders from China would be paid first -- ahead of our troops, veterans, and small businesses that work with the federal government. Instead of debating who would and wouldn't get paid if the debt limit is breached, the Republican Congress should stop lurching from one manufactured crisis to the next, do their job, and allow a vote on a clean bill to raise the debt limit."
