Pingree Criticizes Congressional Planned Parenthood Hearing Held Today

Statement

Date: Sept. 29, 2015
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Abortion

Congresswoman Chellie Pingree said a Congressional hearing held on Capitol Hill today was designed to intimidate Planned Parenthood and providers of women's healthcare.

"Every day women in America are harassed for seeking legal medical care and today Republicans in Congress took that to another level by holding a hearing that was designed to intimidate the largest provider of women's healthcare in America," Pingree said. "That hearing was a witch-hunt orchestrated by people who want to make abortion illegal by attacking Planned Parenthood and threatening to end its funding."

The hearing was convened by Republicans on the House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform and included testimony from Cecile Richards, President of Planned Parenthood.

"Cecile Richards didn't back down and stood up for the high quality healthcare that Planned Parenthood provides to 2.7 million women. It was disappointing to see my colleagues badger and attack her," Pingree said. "The attacks were baseless and without merit and intended to intimidate Ms. Richards and Planned Parenthood. It didn't work and Republican leaders behind these attacks should be ashamed."
