Slaughter: GOP Heads Home With Work Undone

Press Release

Date: July 30, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Congresswoman Louise M. Slaughter today called on Republican congressional leaders to finish their work on essential, job-creating legislation before recessing for August. With a long-term infrastructure fix and the reauthorization of the Export-Import Bank to support American manufacturing jobs left unresolved, Congress has plenty of work to do before it heads home.

"I was raised to believe that you don't go home until your work is done," said Rep. Slaughter. "With thousands of American jobs and the safety of our roads and bridges hanging in the balance, it is irresponsible for congressional leaders to head for the exits without first doing their job. The obstruction and dysfunction we've seen in this Congress has been unprecedented, which is why it's more important than ever to put aside our differences and work together to get things done."

Congresswoman Slaughter put forward a plan last night to attach a reauthorization of the job-creating Export-Import Bank to a bill extending the nation's Highway Trust Fund. The measure garnered bipartisan support on the House Rules Committee, failing by just one vote.

The Republican-controlled 114th Congress has been in session for more than 200 days yet has failed to reauthorize the job-creating Export-Import Bank or come up with a long-term solution to address our nation's crumbling roads and bridges. The Highway Trust Fund is currently on its 33rd short-term extension in the last six years, despite the fact that there are tens of thousands of structurally deficient roads, bridges, and tunnels across the country.
