Location: Washington, DC

Congressman Mark Takai (HI-01) was featured in a video produced by the House Democratic Caucus thanking Pope Francis for his leadership on combatting and reversing climate change, an issue of great importance to the Democratic Party platform.

"I want to extend a warm "mahalo' to Pope Francis for tackling such a pressing issue not only for Hawaii, but our entire world. He is truly embodying the ideals of making sure we are stewards of our earth, so that our keiki inherit one with all the natural splendors we are blessed with today. I look forward to hearing his remarks later this week," said Takai.

His Holiness is scheduled to address a joint session of Congress on Thursday, September 24. This is the first time for a Pope to ever do so. This video on climate change is part of a larger series the Caucus directed on issues that Pope Francis and the Democratic Party share--reversing climate change, eliminating poverty, and establishing a more compassionate immigration system, especially in light of growing global unrest.

"Aloha, Pope Francis. In September, the government warned that almost 30 percent of the United States is in moderate drought conditions or worse, affecting over 100 million Americans," said Takai in the video.
