Hoyer Statement on Hispanic Heritage Month

Statement

Date: Sept. 15, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

House Democratic Whip Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in recognition of Hispanic Heritage Month, which begins today, September 15, and runs through October 15 (see below for Spanish translation):

"Today marks the beginning of Hispanic Heritage Month, a celebration of the vast contributions of Latinos to our country. Through medicine, education, innovation, public service, the military, athletics, and the arts, Latinos have strengthened our economy and enriched our heritage. I'm especially proud to serve alongside Members of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, who work diligently to advocate for Latino families across the country and ensure the American Dream remains within their reach.

"To honor Latinos and their enduring influence on our nation, we must continue to work to ensure that more families have the opportunity to buy a home, send their children to college, access quality health care, and save for retirement. Congress should also work to pass comprehensive immigration reform and provide those who are willing to play by the rules and work hard with a fair shot at the American Dream. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, as well as civil rights leaders and advocates, on these priorities so that we may open doors of opportunity that create well-paying jobs, strengthen the economy, and provide more hardworking Americans with the chance to succeed."
