Weber Votes to Protect Gulf Coast Fishermen and Coastal Businesses

Statement

Date: July 27, 2015
Location: Washington, DC

Today, the United States House of Representatives voted on H.R. 774 - the Illegal, Unreported, and Unregulated Fishing Enforcement Act of 2015. The measure passed by a voice vote. As a co-sponsor, Congressman Randy Weber (R-Friendswood) made the following statement:

"Since October 1, 2014 -- according to the United States Coast Guard - there have been 210 incursions in which foreign illegal fishermen have been apprehended, and have seized 1147 fish, 343 sharks, and nearly 10,000 yards of illegal fishing line. According to the National Marine Fisheries Service, the Gulf of Mexico's commercial and recreational fishing industries support more than 275,000 jobs and contribute nearly $30 billion per year to the region's economy. H.R. 774 is a common-sense solution that will strengthen enforcement by providing the necessary tools and resources to protect local fishermen and coastal businesses from the detrimental economic impacts caused by foreign illegal fishing."
