For many, this has been a busy week with the start of a new school year here in the Lowcountry. Accordingly, I just wanted to wish students, parents, and teachers alike good luck in the new school year. In some ways, it's a chance to be sentimental about how quickly time passes, as little ones become not-so-little ones….our youngest, Blake, is already a junior in high school! In other ways, it's a chance to stop, pause, and reflect on how competitive the world really is and how vital it is that we all look for ways to continue this lifelong process of learning. The statistics here are alarming because, since 2000, American students have fallen from ranking 14th internationally to 28th in science scores and from 19th to 26th in math scores...in fact ranking behind even Lithuania and Norway.

Before I delve too deep in these numbers, let me just say happy Saturday, and most importantly, say how much I hope the teachers, students, volunteers, and parents at all the area schools have a safe and successful school year!
