Aboard USS Missouri, Hartzler Marks 70th Anniversary of End of WWII

Statement

Date: Sept. 2, 2015
Location: Pearl Harbor, Hawaii

Congresswoman Vicky Hartzler (R-Mo.) today issued the following statement after she attended the 70th Anniversary Ceremony of the End of World War II aboard the USS Missouri, where the Instrument of Surrender was signed, officially ending the war.

"As a member of the Armed Services Committee from Missouri I feel honored and privileged to stand aboard the USS Missouri to participate in the commemoration of the 70th anniversary of the end of World War II. I am humbled to think of the contribution of this vessel and its courageous sailors who carried out harrowing missions during the six years between 1939 and 1945 when the world endured the most widespread war in history. It was on this ship, 70 years ago today, where the Japanese Foreign Affairs Minister signed the Instrument of Surrender, officially bringing an end to the deadliest war in human history.

The brave men and women who fought and sacrificed to make that day possible are true heroes and champions for the Allied cause. Without their service to our country, the world would be a vastly different place today. This day provides a sober reminder to all of us of the importance of remaining committed and hopeful despite the continuous threats of the world, of never giving up on the enduring cause of freedom, and the importance of pausing to remember and honor those who have given so much to ensure peace and freedom for future generations."
