Secretary of Defense Issues Vote of Confidence for Picatinny Arsenal

Department of Defense Releases List Calling for Expansion of
Picatinny's Mission

Today, the U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) released to the Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) Commission its proposed list of military bases to close or expand. Picatinny Arsenal, located in Rockaway Township, NJ, was listed as receiving additional missions critical to national security. Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen s (NJ-11) issued the following statement regarding the DoD's decision to support Picatinny Arsenal and its mission expansion.

"Today s recommendation by the U.S. Department of Defense is a vote of confidence for Picatinny Arsenal's existing mission and its future contributions to our national security!

"I am humbled and extremely gratified that Donald Rumsfeld, the Secretary of Defense, has recommended that Picatinny s mission expand. This decision is a major endorsement of Picatinny s critical role in supporting our warfighters in Iraq and Afghanistan.

"This is precisely the case I have been making to everyone inside and outside of the Pentagon: Picatinny Arsenal is relevant and ready. Picatinny researches and develops new technologies which are being used by our soldiers and Marines today on the front lines to better protect themselves and fight terrorism.

"We are indebted to those who work at the Arsenal as well as many individuals and community organizations for their strong support of Picatinny. Since the last BRAC ten years ago, the CRISP (Concerned Responsible Individuals to Save Picatinny) organization, our very active Picatinny Working Group, mayors, state legislators, freeholders, the Morris County Chamber of Commerce and other local chambers have work tirelessly on behalf of the Arsenal to promote its mission and highly qualified workforce.

"The DoD's recommendation is an important milestone for Picatinny, but it is by no means the end of the base realignment and closure process. Our work is not yet done. Picatinny is a national asset in the war against terrorism, and we must keep up our fight on behalf of the Arsenal."
