Schiff Calls on Defense Department to Report on Guantanamo Bay Detainees

WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Adam Schiff (D-CA) is calling on the Defense Department to submit a report to Congress on the status of each detainee held at Camp Delta in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. Schiff will go to the Rules Committee today and ask that his amendment be added to the Defense Department Authorization Bill (H.R. 1815). The report will be due to congress within 90 days.

The report will include the following information about each detainee:

* Name and nationality
* A description of the process used to determine the detainee's status and whether this process complies with international law
* A statement on whether the United States government intends to charge or release the detainee or, if this determination has not been made, then a schedule for when such procedures will be carried out

The report will also include the following information about each former detainee:

* Name and nationality
* The terms of the conditional release agreement
* A statement explaining why that detainee no longer warranted detainment
* Length of detainment, including date of release
* A description of the compensation, if any, provided to the detainee

"Congress has a vital oversight role and it is time to get more complete information on Guantanamo," said Schiff. "This report will provide Congress and the American people with critical information about how we are handling the detainment of enemy combatants in the war on terrorism."

Congressman Schiff worked with Senator Bingaman in the drafting of this amendment based on the Senator's 2003 legislation.

Congressman Schiff is the co-founder of the Democratic Study Group on National Security and a member of both the House Judiciary and International Relations committees. He represents California's 29th Congressional District, including the communities of Alhambra, Altadena, Burbank, East Pasadena, East San Gabriel, Glendale, Monterey Park, Pasadena, San Gabriel, South Pasadena and Temple City.
