Congressman Collins Testifies on Newborn Care Improvement Act

Statement

Date: July 14, 2015
Location: Washington, D.C.

Today, Congressman Doug Collins testified before the House Committee on Veteran's Affairs Subcommittee on Health on his original piece of legislation, H.R. 423, the Newborn Care Improvement Act. The bill will double the length of time that the Veterans Administration can provide care to newborns of female veterans. Congressman Collins issued the following statement after his testimony:

"It is crucial that we consistently strive to better serve those who serve us. In a healthcare system that was originally designed largely to serve men, we need to pay better attention to the health and well-being of our women in uniform, especially those who are balancing their careers and having a family. This is especially important for the women who have high-risk pregnancies, and their children who need extra care during their first days in this world. I personally understand what it's like to be the parent of a child who needed intensive medical attention right after she was born, and it is my hope that a woman who has given her all to serving this country will never have to worry about having her baby cared for. In order to maintain the strongest military in the world, we need to provide the highest level of support to all of our veterans to help them navigate any challenge they face when having a family."
