Official Title of Legislation:

LD 1020: An Act To End Discrimination in Civil Marriage and Affirm Religious Freedom

Highlights:

-States that a marriage of a same-sex couple that is validly licensed and certified in another jurisdiction is recognized for all purposes under the laws of Maine (Sec. 3).

-Does not allow interference with any religious institution's marriage policy. A person authorized to join persons in marriage who fails or refuses to join persons in marriage is not subject to any fine or other penalty (Sec. 5).

-Effective 90 days following adjournment of the 124th Legislature, First Regular Session, unless otherwise indicated.
