Project Vote Smart's Synopsis: Vote to pass a bill that redefines marriage in gender and religiously neutral terms.
Official Title of Legislation: S. 155: An Act to Protect Religious Freedom and Promote Equality in Civil Marriage
Highlights: -Changes definition of marriage to "a legally recognized union of two people" and removes gender-specific connotations from terms used to describe marital or familial relationships (Sec. 5).
-Forbids marriages in which either party is under age 16, even if the marriage receives district approval (Sec. 8).
-Allows a member of the clergy to refuse to perform any marriage, and notes that refusal to perform marriages shall not create any civil claim or cause of action (Sec. 9).
-Takes effect September 1, 2009 (Sec. 11).
