Vote to pass a bill that authorizes two unrelated individuals of the same sex that are at least 18 years of age and neither of whom are currently a partner of another civil union or marriage to enter into a civil union beginning January 1, 2010, which ensures them the same rights, benefits, protections, and responsibilities granted to married couples.

HB 444: A Bill For An Act Relating To Civil Unions.

Official Synopsis:

Extends the same rights, benefits, protections, and responsibilities of spouses in a marriage to partners in a civil union.

Highlights:

- Specifies that individuals licensed to solemnize marriages are authorized to refuse to solemnize a civil union without facing fines or penalties (Sec. 1)

- Prohibits those under the supervision of a guardian or conservator from entering into a civil union, unless the guardian or conservator provides written consent which must be signed and notarized (Sec. 1).

- Specifies that civil unions entered into in other jurisdictions, regardless of whether the union bears the name "civil union," shall be recognized as a civil union in the state of Hawaii (Sec. 1).
