Internship Frequently Asked Questions

All of our internships are unpaid.

Vote Smart is not an accredited institution and cannot award credit directly, but we can work with you to help you obtain credit from your university.

Students attending Drake University can sign up for a specific class entitled "Vote Smart at Drake Internship" to obtain credit for their internship. For more information about the Drake University internship credit, please contact Jennifer Glover-Konfrst at jennifer.gloverkonfrst@drake.edu. Drake University first year students can also receive credit through a First Year Seminar (FYS) class. For more information about the FYS course, please contact the Drake Admissions office at admission@drake.edu.

Students from other universities will need to contact their academic advisors to help them obtain credit for their internship work with Vote Smart.

Interns are expected to complete 130 hours over the course of a semester (about 13 weeks at 10 hours per week); full-time is not required. We encourage applicants to consider a full-time internship, which will give them more research and professional experience.

All interns that complete their internships in good standing are eligible for re-hire. Many former interns have returned as full time staff members after they graduate from college and whenever possible we give preference to former interns when we are hiring.

Intern applicants must submit the following:

  1. Completed application form
  2. Resume and cover letter.
  3. Minimum of three references. References need only be names and contact information.

Application should be completed online: Internship Application

For more information about internship opportunities or alternate application submission options please contact the Internship Coordinator.
