Is the National Internship a paid internship?
All of our national internships are unpaid. However, all interns accepted to our program receive free room and board for the duration of their 10-week internships.
What expenses will I incur while staying at the Great Divide Ranch?
You are responsible for the cost of your transportation to Montana. Also, the rooms do not include private phones, so long distance service is only available by using a calling card on the central lodge phone. We will cover the cost of your room and board, but you may want to bring money for shopping trips and weekend excursions.
Is the internship position full-time?
Yes, all interns are required to work 40 hours a week for 10 weeks. The workday is from 8 to 5 – Monday through Friday – and includes an hour lunch break. You must obtain approval from your supervisor before taking time off and are required to make up hours that you miss after hours or on weekends. Exceptions may be made for family emergencies.
Can I get college credit for my internship?
We are not affiliated with a university and cannot award credit directly, but we can work with you to help you obtain credit from your university. Many students receive credit by taking an “internship course” in their major. To pursue this option, you should contact your academic advisor. We will submit any evaluations/paperwork that you may need to receive credit upon completion of your internship.
Will I be able to get a job with Project Vote Smart after I complete my internship?
All interns that complete their internships in good standing are eligible for re-hire. Former interns often return as full time staff members after they graduate from college and whenever possible we give preference to former interns when we are hiring.
Does the Great Divide Ranch have cell phone service?
Most cell phones do not work at the ranch, so please bring a calling card for personal calls. Some carriers do service Philipsburg and almost all carriers service Missoula, Butte, and other larger cities. Please contact your service provider for more information about cell phone service in Montana.
In addition to my office duties, will I be asked to do other things to help at the ranch?
Yes, all interns and staff are expected to contribute to the Project “community” and
maintenance of the facilities. You may be assigned to help clean, to work in the kitchen, or to help with outdoor maintenance. As with the Project office work, we are all expected to do our assigned part and offer to chip in whenever additional help is needed.
How do I apply?

- Completed application form.
- Resume and cover letter.
