  • Endorsed by NOW/PAC"At the federal level, NOW/PAC relies on recommendations from state and local NOW chapters that are familiar with a candidate’s record and positions. All NOW PACs base their endorsements on a broad feminist agenda. No other PACs expect candidates to take such strong stands on such a wide range of issues. These issues include, but are not limited to:Reproductive rights and justiceEconomic justiceEnding violence against womenRacial justiceLBGT rights (including marriage equality)Constitutional EqualityAfter the elections, NOW activists work with the officials our PACs helped elect to assist and encourage them in meeting their commitment to be leaders in the fight for equality and justice for all women."http://nowpac.org/rigorous-criteria/ (nowpac.org)

  • Gary Peters. Gary Peters Statement on Oakland County Judge Upholding Planned Parenthood's Right to Build Facility in Auburn Hills. 11 January 2012. "As a longtime supporter of women's health, I am very pleased with Circuit Judge James Alexander's decision which allows Planned Parenthood to move forward with building a facility in Auburn Hills. In 2010, Planned Parenthood found that 5,400 Oakland County women a year go to Planned Parenthood facilities in other counties because there isn't one in Oakland County. This facility will provide necessary care for thousands of women who need and deserve a local health care provider focused on women's health. Family planning services for low-income women have been proven to be effective in preventing millions of unplanned pregnancies and abortions over the past 40 years, and this issue should be common ground for all Americans who want to see the need for abortion reduced." (votesmart.org)
  • Gary Peters. Letter to Democratic Members of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees. 13 September 2011. "By failing to permit the District of Columbia to spend local government funds on abortion, we are sending the message that low-income women should not have access to the same medical services that middle- and upper-income women can access. Ultimately, this prohibition may threaten the health of medically vulnerable women and deny patients the right to access constitutionally protected medical services. We must strive to expand health care services for Americans throughout the nation -- not place barriers in the road of a woman seeking medical care simply because of the state, city, or district that she lives in." (votesmart.org)
  • Gary Peters, Abortion Coverage. 4 May 2011. "The people in Michigan are clear: Our number one priority is jobs. And yet the Republican majority here in Washington is once again ignoring the economy and pushing a bill that raises taxes and attacks women's health care choices. Current law already prohibits Federal funds from covering abortion services, and it has for 30 years. Now Republicans want to stop private insurers from offering coverage, and they want to ban women from purchasing a comprehensive health care plan with their own money." (votesmart.org)
  • Gary Peters. Proud Democratic Fighter for Michigan. 03 October 2012. "Gary Peters will always stand with organizations like Planned Parenthood that provide low income women with necessary health care, preventative screenings and access to contraception. Peters has always voted to protect a woman's right to choose and he's earned a 100% rating from NARAL Pro-Choice America." (www.petersforcongress.com)

  • Gary Peters. U.S. Rep Peters Marks Tax Day with a Call for Tax Fairness. 17 April 2012. "Today millions of hardworking Michiganders are doing their part by paying their taxes, and now it's time for Congress to do its part," said U.S. Rep. Gary Peters. "There is no reason why someone making $1 million or more per year should pay a lower tax rate than a teacher or an auto worker, and that's why President Obama proposed the Buffett Rule. It's disappointing that Senate Republicans put billionaires first by blocking debate on the Buffett Rule, but I'm committed to working with President Obama to finally achieve tax fairness that puts working Americans first." • Gary Peters. Budget and Tax Cuts. 3 October 2012. "I have cosponsored and strongly support legislation to implement the "Buffett Rule," which would ensure that those Americans fortunate enough to make over $1 million a year pay at least a 30% tax rate. Millionaires and billionaires shouldn't be able to game our tax system and pay lower rates than working families - we need to level the playing field for all Americans." (peters.house.gov)
  • "During tough economic times, tax relief is critical to both easing the burden facing middle class families and jumpstarting the economy. Hard working, middle class families are taking home more money in every paycheck. Nearly four million Michigan residents are benefitting from this tax cut." (votesmart.org)
  • "One of Congress' most important responsibilities is to protect taxpayers by reducing waste and keeping government spending under control. We must restore honest, transparent accounting and get serious about addressing our budget deficit head on. We need to cut government waste, stop corporations from hiding their money in overseas tax shelters and responsibly end the Iraq War. We also need to enact strong Pay-as-you-go legislation to force Congress to reign in spending by requiring that any new spending proposed be paid for elsewhere in the budget rather than through borrowing. Congress should also create a bipartisan debt commission to identify budget reforms necessary to balance the budget over the long-term. If Congress does these things, we can balance the budget and reduce America's debt while cutting middle class and small business taxes and continuing to make critical investments for long-term job creation." To further free up the lending market, the Obama Administration recently proposed the release of $15 billion of TARP funds to create a secondary market for SBA loans. • "That's why I voted to bring over $3 billion in investments to Michigan's schools, $52 million for Oakland County schools alone, through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (also known as the stimulus bill). In order to provide relief to local schools and ease the burden on state budgets, the ARRA provided federal IDEA and Title 1 grants as well as investments in school modernization construction and direct help to local school districts with budget shortfalls through State Stabilization fund. While some see education and economic development as separate issues, I believe they are one in the same. The education investments in the economic recovery plan will create new jobs now make America's workforce more globally competitive. One of the most important pieces of legislation affecting K-12 education, the "No Child Left Behind Act" (NCLB,) will come up for reauthorization this year. While the original goals of improving student achievement and holding schools and teachers to tougher accountability standards should be maintained, the Act has put an underfunded federal mandate on our local districts for years and significant modifications to the legislation are needed to fully achieve its goals. I support changes that maintain original goals of NCLB while also easing the burden of unfunded mandates, revising Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) standards and sanctions and providing reasonable flexibility to states and local schools." (votesmart.org)
  • Gary Peters. Issue Position: Education. 27 January 2012. "In Congress, I believe we must make a national commitment to preK-12 education. We must fully fund early childhood education programs, equip our classrooms with cutting edge technology, strengthen science and technology curriculums, demand higher standards, reduce class size and make sure that we have the best trained, most qualified teachers in the world. And, we must also never neglect the unique needs of children in our special education programs. Too often, the makers of education policy in Washington are out of touch with the changing job market, the needs of our children and the increasing demands placed on our teachers. As an experienced educator and policy maker, I look forward to shaking up the status quo in Congress." (votesmart.org)
  • Gary Peters. Making Education a Priority. 03 October 2012. "To help our students succeed, we need to make sure our schools have the resources they need. I voted for the Recovery Act because it made critical investments in school assistance programs such as IDEA, Title 1 and Head Start. There's still a lot of work to do, but we have an obligation to give our next generation the brightest future possible." (peters.house.gov)

  • We need to act immediately to lower the price of gas, and to make a serious investment in alternative energy research and development here at home.* Address Energy Speculation & Crack Down on Price Gouging. One of the largest factors driving up the cost of oil is out-of-control speculation in the oil markets. Through increasing transparency and limiting the amount of money that hedge funds can dump into the energy markets, we can immediately bring down the price of oil. We should also enact strict penalties for unscrupulous companies that unfairly increase gasoline prices to gouge customers.* Invest in Alternative Energy Industries. By eliminating taxpayer-funded subsidies for Big Oil and reinvesting in alternative energy industries and technologies, we can reduce energy costs while creating new jobs here in Michigan.* Partner with Universities to Expand Research. Michigan has world-class educational institutions side-by-side with world class manufacturing facilities and businesses. If we double our investment in alternative energy research and development, including advanced cellulosic ethanol, fuel cells, and plug-in hybrid vehicles, we can lead the way in developing the next generation energy technologies.* Focus on the Long-Term Growth of the Green Economy. To encourage growth and investment in alternative energy industries, the first step we can take is to extend the solar and wind energy tax credits, and provide long-term production incentives for renewable fuels. We are facing tough times here in Michigan. Fortunately we have the necessary resources, both human and infrastructure, to be a leader in the creation of new green jobs. Through the infusion of capital into new and existing businesses, the use of tax incentives for new companies that create jobs to locate in Michigan, public-private partnerships with our institutes of higher learning, and a commitment to retrain our workforce, the reciprocal benefit of new jobs and a cleaner environment will create a win-win situation for Michigan and for a better America. We must make a strong commitment to shift energy from fossil fuels to clean renewable sources. Requiring 20% of our nation's energy to come from renewable sources will generate a need for new industries and green jobs. • "after reviewing the new Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rule to curb carbon emissions released this week, U.S. Representative Gary Peters today released the following statement. Peters supports taking action to set goals for carbon reduction because he believes that Michigan is in a unique position to answer this challenge by continuing to lead the country in clean energy development. Peters does have some concerns with the current implementation process, which he believes is unfair to Michigan. He encourages the EPA to use this review period to adopt a mid-term review process similar to what was included for the vehicle fuel efficiency standards." (votesmart.org)

And, by 2014, insurance denials based on pre-existing conditions will be a thing of the past for all Americans." (votesmart.org)

DOMA does not prevent same-sex couples from marrying and an estimated 132,000 couples have now done so, with many of these couples raising children together. There is no logical connection between the denial of federal recognition to these same-sex couples, who already are married, and the marital or parenting behavior of different-sex couples. It is irrational to claim that Congress needs to or should harm these families in order to benefit others, particularly as those families receive federal recognition regardless of DOMA [¦] Congress has no legitimate federal interest that is rationally served by treating married gay and lesbian couples as unmarried for all federal purposes.
