Rhode Island State Legislative Election 2020 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
Yes b) Do you support legalizing abortion when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
No c) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
I believe that reproductive freedom is essential for equality. When access to reproductive health care including abortion only exists for individuals with the insurance or assets to cover costs, not for all, we are not equal.
No a) In order to balance the budget, do you support reducing state employee salaries AND/OR pensions?
Yes b) In order to balance the budget, do you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
I support increasing the RI income tax on those with the highest incomes, those with incomes over $500,000.
Yes a) Do you support a limit on campaign contributions to state candidates?
Yes b) Do you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Yes c) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
No d) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
Yes e) Do you support automatic voter registration?
f) Other or expanded principles:
No a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
No b) Should an individual under 18 accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
No c) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
No d) Do you support the use of private prisons in Rhode Island?
No e) Do you support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders?
No f) Should individuals be prohibited from wearing non-medical face coverings during events?
RI law allows minors accused of violent crimes to be petitioned out of the juvenile system and prosecuted as adults. I beleive this is done only rarely. During the COVID 19 pandemic I believe that individuals may reasonably be required to cover their noses and mouths when in puiblic.
Yes a) Do you support state government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No b) Do you support lowering state income taxes as a means of promoting economic growth?
c) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
No d) Do you support requiring welfare applicants to pass a drug test in order to receive benefits?
Yes e) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage of Rhode Island?
Yes f) Do you support requiring employers to provide paid family leave?
Yes g) Do you support providing financial relief to businesses AND/OR corporations negatively impacted by the state of national emergency for COVID-19?
I believe that regulations should only be reduced/repealed with great care when they have been determined not to be serving public good purpose.
a) Do you support adopting federal education standards in Rhode Island?
b) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yes c) Do you support increasing teacher salaries AND/OR benefits in Rhode Island?
Yes d) Should immigrants unlawfully present in the United States who graduate from Rhode Island high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
Yes e) Do you support requiring public schools to provide free feminine hygiene products?
I believe RI education standards are higher than federal standards. To the extent that we need to allign with federal standards in order to receive federal dollars I can accept the federal standards. The state of RI and local school districts currently support charter schools The formula for that funding disadvantages the regular public schools. I believe that issue should be corrected.
Yes a) Do you support state funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, geo-thermal)?
Yes b) Do you support government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
Yes c) Do you support increasing state funding for clean drinking water initiatives?
I'd llike to see the state take a more active role in encouraging the development of solar energy projects in brown fields, over parking lots etc. It is ashame to see open space being taken over by solar panels.
Yes a) Do you generally support gun-control legislation?
Yes b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
No c) Should teachers be allowed to bring guns into the classroom after passing gun safety training?
Yes d) Should a license be required for gun ownership?
e) Other or expanded principles:
Yes a) Should the state government increase funding for treatment facilities to combat opioid abuse?
Yes b) Do you support Medicaid expansion through Rhode Island's health care programs?
Yes c) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yes d) Do you support legislation that grants citizens the right to choose to die through euthanasia?
No e) Do you support eliminating religious exemptions for vaccinations?
Yes f) Do you support requiring businesses to provide paid medical leave during public health crises, such as COVID-19?
g) Do you support the creation of a state-administered program to allow for the purchase and importation of wholesale prescription drugs from Canada?
I've sponsored the Lila Manfield Sapinsley Compassionate Care in Dying Act for several years. This act would allow an individual with a prognosis of less tha 3 months to live to seek, and a doctor to prescribe, something so that the individual can end their life on their own terms. Since the indidual would be self administering the substance this is not quite euthanasia as I understand it. I don't know enough about the idea of importing drugs from Canada to answer that question.
Yes a) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in Rhode Island's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes b) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in Rhode Island's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes c) Do you support greater efforts by Rhode Island state government in closing the pay gap between men and women?
I am partuclarly proud of my work with colleagues in the House and in the advocacy communities to insure that RI protects indiviuduals from discrimination on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity. We have work to do on pay equaity. Our current laws are sadly out of date and ineffective. I support the work of my colleagues Representative Susan Donovan and Senator Gayle Goldin on this issue.
I will continue advocvating for civil rights and civil liberties and for opportunities for all. i am particularly concerned about law enforcement officer abuse of the power provided by the badge. I will work with colleagues to see the Law Enforcement Officers Bill of Rights rewritten.
RI cannot get through and out of this crisis by cutting the budget as we tried in 2008. We must act to meet the needs of the residents of RI and invest in our human infrastructure.
