I believe in the right of women to make a choice of whether to obtain a medically safe legal abortion. I believe it is a moral responsibility to provide this choice to women in publicly funded health care settings so that income or financial circumstances does not interfere with access to comprehensive quality care. That includes religiously affiliated health care settings that receive public funds.

In my 21 years in public office, I have been one of the strongest advocates for public funding of abortion services.

As Chair of the Assembly Public Safety Committee, I have worked hard for prison reform. I believe in alternatives to incarceration for certain non-violent offenders. I support California prison realignment with the requirement that resources be made available to communities to assist the prisoner transition back to the community--funds must be made available for housing, job training, access to health care including drug abuse/mental health treatment.

I authored legislation which permitted media access to prisoners. Although it passed the legislature, it was vetoed by the Governor. I will continue to work to open the gates to real prison scrutiny. [...]

Domestic Workers Bill of Rights. Extends to domestic workers basic rights to labor protections including overtime pay, reporting time pay, a safe and healthy workplace, meal and rest beaks.

Trust Act. Protects the rights of immigrants by prohibiting local police from detaining anyone on an immigration hold if the person is not charged with or has not been convicted of a serious or violent crime. The bill would enhance the ability of local departments to fight crime by restoring community trust and saving jail space for serious offenders.
