  • Louie Gohmert. Rep. Gohmert's Remarks at the 38th Annual Walk for Life. 24 January 2011. "Allow me to borrow from Abraham Lincoln. Fondly do we hope, fervently do we pray that this mighty scourge of abortion may speedily pass away; yet, if God wills it, America suffers until all the wealth piled by the abortionists--38 years of killing innocent babies--shall be lost. As was said 3,000 years ago, so it still must be said the 'judgments of the Lord are true and righteous altogether with malice towards none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God gives us to see the right.' Let us strive on to finish the work we're in, to bind up the nation's wounds from abortions, to care for those who have undergone an abortion and from all those suffering from those losses, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and lasting end to the abortion deaths among ourselves and our communities. May God heal our land and bless America." (votesmart.org)

  • Louie Gohmert. Impact Of Massachusetts Election. 20 January 2010. "We are supposed to have, under our Constitution, as was mentioned in the Declaration of Independence, this right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Whether you're an unborn child or whether you're an old geezer like some of us, you actually have a right to life. And here the Federal Government is saying we're going to snuff yours out a little early because we just don't find that you're all that productive. Where is that line drawn once they're allowed to say now you buy a product or you don't get to live here? (votesmart.org)
  • Louie Gohmert. Rep. Louie Gohmert Supports The Protect Life Act. 13 October 2011. "Life is precious “ that includes the life of the unborn. One of the principle tasks of the government is to protect the lives of those who are unable to safeguard themselves. As it stands now, ObamaCare does not bar the use of taxpayer money to heartlessly take an unborn child's life. The Protect Life Act will amend ObamaCare to prevent the use of federal funding funneled to abortion or abortion coverage." (gohmert.house.gov)
  • Louie Gohmert. Rep. Gohmert Addresses March for Life Rally. 22 January 2008. "Isn't it thrilling to be here in the nation's Capital? Isn't it exciting to be here with so many friends with hearts of one accord? There's a lot of beauty and glory around us here, isn't there? Shouldn't every child, born and unborn, have the chance to experience it? As King David said in essence: ˜You Lord did form us in our mother's womb; You did weave us in our mother's womb. You formed our inner parts. We should give thanks to You for we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works, oh Lord; Our souls know it so very well (Psalm 139:13-14).'" (votesmart.org)
  • Louie Gohmert. Legal Cesspools. 27 May 2010. "We've had time to make sure that we continue to allow the unborn to be killed. We've had time to make sure that Federal tax dollars can be taken from taxpayers who believe that it's murder to kill a helpless, unborn child and put that into a health care bill and call it health care." • Louie Gohmert. Authorization for Use of Military Force. 18 May 2012. "People have heard me, Mr. Speaker, talk about how we have messed up what's going on in Afghanistan. The Taliban was defeated; they were routed. We had less than 1,500 Americans in Afghanistan when the Taliban was defeated. And so many Americans have forgotten, but for so much of the Iraq war people were saying--now, the way the Taliban was defeated in Afghanistan, that's the way to fight a war on foreign soil. You empower the enemy of our enemy, give them support. [¦] They're our allies. For those that say you Republicans are a bunch of xenophobes or Islamaphobes, these are Muslim friends. They buried family and friends while Americans were burying family and friends because they had fought together. They initially defeated the Taliban, and they did it very effectively. Then we began to add troops by the tens of thousands, and we became occupiers in Afghanistan. We began to pour billions and billions and billions of dollars into Afghanistan. Then Pakistan began supporting the Taliban, and they continue to support the Taliban and we're continuing to support Pakistan [¦] But as long as we've got troops--I don't think President Obama has handled this very well in Afghanistan. I think he's gotten some bad advice. I think President Bush got some bad advice. But as long as we have troops on foreign soil, we should never again do what was done to our military in Vietnam, yank their feet out from under them and leave our allies to be killed." (votesmart.org)
  • Peace Action. 04/18/2012. "Louie Gohmert supported the interests of the Peace Action 14 percent in 2010." (votesmart.org)
  • Louie Gohmert. H Con Res 28. 112th Congress. Removing Troops from Afghanistan. Louie Gohmert voted Nay on 03/17/2011. (votesmart.org)
  • Peace Action West. 04/18/2012. "Louie Gohmert supported the interests of Peace Action West 14 percent in 2010." (votesmart.org)
  • Louie Gohmert. Afghanistan. 7 May 2012. "I was in Afghanistan a couple weeks ago. I was in Afghanistan a couple months before that. And as one of the Afghans pointed out, former ally--well, they are still allies, as far as they are concerned. This administration has thrown them under the bus--but they pointed out, you know, from the Taliban's perspective, they have said we, the Taliban, do not have to win a single battle. All we have to do is be here when the United States leaves [¦] So it was amazing to see the President over kind of doing what appeared to be a victory lap around Afghanistan and back home: gee, the Taliban's back is broken, things are looking good, and we now have an agreement going forward with Afghanistan. Great news." (votesmart.org)
  • Louie Gohmert. American Troops In Afghanistan: Commit 100 Percent Or Get Them Out. 1 October 2009. "Mr. Speaker, we know that in the 1960s and 1970s we committed our troops to Vietnam. But we found out at the end of the war, after 2 weeks of constant carpet bombing of Hanoi when Sam Johnson was leaving the Hanoi Hilton, he was told, You silly Americans, if you'd kept bombing us for 1 more week like that, we would have had to surrender unconditionally. The message of Vietnam should be either commit 100 percent or get out. Don't leave people out there to die without full commitment. Now we have people on the left saying, get out of Afghanistan now. We have people on the right saying, do whatever it takes to win. And I'm here to say, Mr. Speaker, the President should not keep going on talk shows and going around the world while he has a report suggesting what to do. He needs to commit 100 percent to the war in Afghanistan, give them everything they need, or get out now." (votesmart.org)

  • Louie Gohmert. BUDGET FACTS - Compare the Plans that Gohmert Supported Over the Unprecedented Spending Proposal Passed by the House. 3 April 2009. "Summary of the Republican Budget Alternative (Gohmert Voted in Favor): [¦] Increases the Defense budget by $5 billion over the Obama budget and reserves the $50 billion annual "placeholder" for the war or unmet DOD needs. [¦] Overview of the Republican Study Committee (RSC) Budget Proposal (Gohmert Voted in Favor): [¦] - Provides full defense funding, equal to the President's request (plus money for overseas operations) - Assumes NO cuts to veterans spending - Makes real reductions to non-defense discretionary spending: a "zero-growth" baseline for non-defense spending, PLUS a one percent annual reduction to non-defense spending, plus additional savings from lower priority programs." (gohmert.house.gov)
  • Louie Gohmert. Balanced Budget Amendment. 16 November 2011. "America's in trouble. It's in big trouble. And as we fight these battles, it doesn't help to have people jumping on a bandwagon that really wasn't the bandwagon they showed themselves to really believe in previously. And by that, I'm talking about Secretary Panetta, Secretary of Defense. He wrote this scathing letter talking about how if the sequestration occurs, hundreds of billions are cut from defense, it could mean the loss of--I believe it was a couple hundred million of our military, which is a little ironic coming from the current Secretary of Defense, because the people on this side of the aisle believe in a strong defense. We all believe that it is our number one job to provide for the common defense, because if we don't do that, all these other things just go away and we're overtaken by people that want to bring down our way of life [¦] The problem is, we can't afford massive cuts to our defense. And at the very time they're okay with that, the President goes down to Australia and says we're going to commit some troops down here too. We've got troops this President's committing all over the place, without any regard, like in Libya or Egypt, to the outcome of what is being done, what's going to happen at the end. And we're going to pay a severe price. We need to stand for a solid defense." (votesmart.org)
  • Louie Gohmert. Getting Back on Road to Prosperity. 18 January 2012. "Then the Department of Defense. Since we've got $78 billion that the Defense Department has unobligated--it has been appropriated but unspent--why couldn't we use some of that $78 billion to help eliminate some of the cuts that are being suggested--in fact, being demanded of Defense?" • Louie Gohmert. Rep. Gohmert's Remarks on the Anniversary of the Failed Stimulus. 17 February 2011. "The 'stimulus' package has clearly failed to live up to the expectations the Obama Administration touted to the American people in February 2009. It has let down millions of workers by failing to keep unemployment under 8 percent as promised. With a $1-trillion dollar price tag, the stimulus has only added to our out-of-control national debt, which is over $14 trillion. We are borrowing, mostly from the Chinese, 42 cents on the dollar. Now, President Obama has introduced a new budget plan that will more than double our entire national debt in 5 years. This new proposal is irresponsible. The financial future of our children, grandchildren and even great grandchildren should not be addressed in such a cavalier manner. The economic collapse of the recovering nation is at stake. We cannot borrow and spend our way to prosperity. The answer is in making cuts to federal spending, divesting the federal government of unneeded assets and using the resources with which this nation is so very blessed to create new jobs, bring down energy prices and cause a new resurgence of prosperity for American workers. We will not succeed by doubling the credit limit for our nation's debt while failing to regain spending." (votesmart.org)

  • Louie Gohmert. Rep. Louie Gohmert's Statement on the Budget Deal. 12 April 2011. "House Republicans pledged to cut $100 billion this year from the 14 trillion dollar federal deficit. Valiant Americans, tired of profligate spending, rallied behind the powerful words in the U.S. Constitution, 'We the people.' The battle cry--'Stop the wasteful government spending.' These patriotic Americans wanted to make sure their tax dollars stopped pouring into ObamaCare and big government programs draining our future generation's bank accounts. It's a wee bit awkward when our leadership demands that we all make 'The Pledge to America' to cut at least $100 billion this year, and then they demand we vote to break that pledge." (votesmart.org)
  • Louie Gohmert. Rep. Gohmert's Statement on the President's Budget Speech. 13 April 2011. "Today the President presented a budget plan that calls for higher taxes and even more spending. This budget reform map, designed to "win the future,' will only add to the already stratospheric $14 trillion national debt. Presented as a 'nonpartisan' approach to solving this nation's debt crisis, President Obama instead delivered more wasteful spending and tax hikes that will only dim the hopes of a brighter future. I would have hoped after the massive bailouts and stimulus spending that exceeded anything ever attempted in the world's history, this administration should have learned that taking from those who earned and giving to the administration's supporters does not revive the economy. This plan will only shackle the dreams and prosperity of America's future generations. Real change can only occur by cutting out-of-control government spending." (votesmart.org)
  • Louie Gohmert. Statement on Senate Rejection of Cut, Cap, and Balance. 22 July 2011. "America's true strength is from the foundation of our principles and the people willing to stand and defend them. It's time to stand firm on principles to build a better nation. It's time to implement ideas that will notably rein in our federal spending and reduce the trillion dollar deficit spending. It's time to stop playing party politics and reassure all Americans that the United States is still the place of opportunity for our children and grandchildren." (votesmart.org)
  • The Club for Growth. 04/18/2012. "On the votes used to calculate its ratings, The Club for Growth attaches more value to those votes it considers more important. For 2010, The Club for Growth gave Louie Gohmert a rating of 92 percent." (votesmart.org)

  • Louie Gohmert. Rep. Louie Gohmert's Statement on President Obama's 2012 Budget. 15 February 2011. "The House Republicans will be introducing H.R. 1 this week, which will save more than $182 billion over the next 12 months. The answer is in making cuts to federal spending, not creating new federal programs to spend money. We must refrain and withdraw from the Washington mentality that there is no way American workers could possibly spend their own money as wisely as the federal government. It is only when the government spends less and the American public is allowed to spend more of their own money that we will finally pull out of this financial quicksand." (votesmart.org)

  • Louie Gohmert. Rep. Gohmert Introduces the American Jobs Act of 2011. 14 September 2011. "Rep. Louie Gohmert (TX-01) released the following statement today after introducing the "American Jobs Act of 2011" which will create jobs by taking the corporate tax rate to zero. 'We have heard a lot of rhetoric about job creation from President Obama over the last several days. After waiting to see what the President would actually put into legislative language, and then waiting to see if anybody would actually introduce the President's bill in the House, today I took the initiative and introduced the 'American Jobs Act of 2011.' It is a very simple bill, which will eliminate the corporate tax which serves as a tariff that our American companies pay on goods they produce here in America. This bill will actually create jobs in America.'" (gohmert.house.gov)
  • Louie Gohmert. America's Spending. 15 September 2011. "You reduce the corporate tax. If you reduce it at all, the more you reduce it, the more jobs are going to come back because that means more and more corporations will be able to compete in the global market, and they'll be able to come back here, union members, not the government union members--and that seems to be where union leadership wants to go these days." • Louie Gohmert. Providing for Further Consideration of H.R. 609, College Access and Opportunity act of 2005. 30 March 2006. "So it was a good thing, and we recognize the importance of education, and we are trying to help them. So that addresses that comment from my colleague. But with regard to the bill, I have grave concerns about it, especially to allow the States to start accrediting. Governments have done enough damage to education in K-12 over the last 30 years. I was very concerned about that, but I appreciate Chairman MCKEON working with me, and I appreciate his staff working with us. They have agreed to support an amendment which strikes out the provision that allows States to apply to the Federal Government which creates more Federal Government, to allow them to start accrediting, and that provision, under my amendment, will be struck. There will be no additional State agencies accrediting universities and colleges, and I am hopeful that that will be passed with the chairman's support of that." (votesmart.org)
  • Louie Gohmert. Addressing the Concerns of America. 15 November 2010. "Now, I was asked recently, well, now, you've advocated eliminating the Department of Education. And yet you've also talked about schools ought to provide vocational training. Right on both counts. $68 billion budget, throw another $10 billion in there this year, and for what? Pays the Department of Education, have lots and lots of bureaucrats, take a hunk of the money for themselves, dole out the rest. And I get it. I've got friends, Republicans, Democrats on school boards across the country who've said we've become so enslaved, so reliant on Federal money, we'll be broke as a school system if you cut off the funds immediately. So what I think would be more fair, would be more constitutional is just say, we eliminate the Department of Education, and then we'll take that money and we will have a formula to distribute it to the schools across the country. And they'll get a lot more money. And then over, say, a 5-year period--I'm flexible--we could compromise on what would be a good way to do it. You provide a formula that the States and the people, under the 10th Amendment, pick up their obligation to support education and take it away from the Federal Government [¦] We incentivize them to take over their constitutional obligation. Since education's not an enumerated power under the Constitution, it's reserved under the 10th Amendment to the States and people. Let the local control take over, because when there was no Federal control and when I was going through school, high schools had vocational training." (votesmart.org)

"The news today that this administration is having wholesale releases of people who have entered the country illegally is devastating to those who follow the rules by trying to bring loved ones here legally. It is also a position that tells the world we are not exerting our sovereignty as a nation. It says to the potential billion or more people who would like to come here to do so illegally and get our welfare, our healthcare, and our benefits that taxpayers are funding, because even if you get caught here illegally, this administration has decided that there will be no consequences. This utter disregard for the rule of law is so hurtful to people of every race, gender, religion, and national origin who have worked so hard to follow the law. It also moves us ever closer to being like those countries which immigrants are fleeing because of their disregard for the rule of law." (votesmart.org)
  • Louie Gohmert. Illegal Immigration and the Economy. 26 May 2010. "But what about when we come to the point when the Federal law enforcement is told by their commander in the White House that enforcing the law is a bad idea? That's problematic. And then that spills over until you have somebody who is charged and his whole job is enforcing the immigration laws, and he says, if Arizona sends somebody that they have detained because they're illegally in the country, he may not even enforce the law. See, that flies in the face, just like the President's quote says. There's a great amount of risk when the core values that we've taught our children, that we all care about, are breached. And I'm telling you, when you have someone in the Federal Government charged with enforcing the law and they're being taught, and it's coming top down, ignore the law, don't enforce it, they're violating all the core values that we've tried to instill in our children and the things that we grew up believing, and this country is not the country we hoped for, that we dreamed for. It becomes like the country that so many immigrants flee illegally, because they're not based, their country does not have the rule of law that's in force. Too much graft and corruption." • Louie Gohmert. Letter to President Obama. 9 September 2011. "Members of the bipartisan Immigration Reform Caucus along with member of the House vehemently oppose your August 18 2011 announcement to bypass Congress and use prosecutorial discretion to achieve amnesty to individuals who are illegally residing in the US. The manner with which your administration has introduced this policy not only robs the public of a thorough betting, but it also fails to appreciate the negative consequences of this policy shift [¦] Also, this policy has the added affect of further encouraging illegal immigration. Frankly put, if we don't take our own laws seriously enough to enforce, why should we expect anyone to follow them? This policy will introduce a new wave a illegal immigrants emboldened with the knowledge that not only is it okay to break the law, but they will likely be rewarded for it with de facto amnesty statues, thereby exacerbating an already vicious cycle we as a nation try been trying to address for over two decades. This attempt to satisfy the narrow interests for the pro-amnesty lobby has ultimately earned the distrust of the greater American public. Our fear is that this policy will irreparably harm the prospects of true immigration reform for many years to come. Mr President, our request is simple: enforce our immigration laws evenly without passion, prejudice or preference." (votesmart.org)

  • Louie Gohmert. Social Security Reform. 9 February 2005. "Privatization is not a good idea; we are not for that. However, allowing young workers to personalize their retirement by taking a part of their retirement funds and placing them in a personal Social Security savings account that the individual actually owns is a good idea. And we are open to discussion on that. I am proud to be a part of looking at that. Such accounts currently are in place for State and local retirees, and they are performing at least 200 to 300 percent higher than Social Security. What a great thing, to provide individuals with a decent retirement while preserving Social Security for those that are on it and for those that are over 55 years of age. Such an account could actually be owned by the worker and not by the government. The State and local governments manage the accounts and see that they are safely invested, all a vast benefit for their employees. I was under such a system in Texas as a judge and chief justice." • Louie Gohmert. Newsmax - Texas Rep. Gohmert: Obama is 'Scarer-in-Chief,' His Tactics Are 'Unconscionable'. 17 July 2011. "'The fact is there's $2.6 trillion in Treasury notes in the Social Security trust fund [¦] There is enough money to pay every social security check for at least three years.' And he said the seniors should stop worrying that they will not be getting their checks, as non-payment would be illegal. 'In 1996 a very conservative new Congress passed a law so that it would be even clearer - that if there is a shortfall that needs to be made up in the cash on hand, you can sell some of the Treasury notes to pay the Social Security.'" (votesmart.org)
  • Louie Gohmert. The Republican Revolution. 9 February 2009. "As most people around here know, I proposed a 2-month tax holiday where money would just not be withdrawn for Federal income tax purposes and for FICA purposes. Some say, well, that may put a drain on the Social Security fund. There is no Social Security fund. If we had the proper nerve in this body, we would get a majority that would agree to pass a law that says Social Security tax money has to go into a Social Security Trust Fund, but we've not yet gotten a majority from either side that is willing to do that. I am still hopeful, and I still pray that that will occur." (votesmart.org)
