Issue Positions

In response to the increasing unwillingness of candidates to answer issue questions, Project Vote Smart has researched Presidential and Congressional candidates' public ecords to determine candidates' likely responses on certain key issues. These issue positions, from the year 2012, are provided below as a courtesy to voters.

  • Marc Veasey. Healthcare. 8 June 2012. "Republicans in the state and federal governments are fighting to turn back the clock on women's health issues all over the country and make it more difficult for the economically disadvantaged to receive proper healthcare. In the Texas State House, I fought to block Republican bills that would cut funding for women's health and that would force women to submit to unnecessary, and frankly, invasive vaginal ultrasound examinations. If elected, I will continue to protect women's rights and equal access to healthcare for everyone here in Texas and across the country." (www.marcveasey.com)

  • Marc Veasey. Dallas Morning News: 2012 My Ballot US House District 33. Responded "I support President Obama in his goal to withdraw all troops from Afghanistan by the end of 2014. However, like President Obama, I recognize that this is a goal and the timeline for Afghanistan may change as advised by his generals on the ground." to the question: "President Barack Obama wants to hand over all security of Afghanistan to Afghans by the end of 2014. Do you support that goal? Why or why not?" (c3.thevoterguide.org)

  • Marc Veasey. Dallas Morning News: 2012 My Ballot US House District 33. Responded "I support reforming the U.S. tax code to end the Bush tax cuts, close corporate tax loopholes and incorporate the 'Buffett Rule,' which would ensure that millionaires are not paying taxes at a rate lower than that of average middle-class Americans. " to the question: "Do you favor reforming the U.S. tax code? If so, how many tax rates would you prefer? What deductions should be retained, if any?" (c3.thevoterguide.org)
Yes Inferred Answer Economy: Do you support federal spending as a means of promoting economic growth? View Citations

Vote Smart's Research

  • Marc Veasey. Dallas Morning News: 2012 My Ballot US House District 33. Responded "Washington should pass the American Jobs Act as proposed by President Obama. Extending unemployment benefits absolutely helps the current unemployment dilemma. " to the question: "What steps, if any, should Washington take to spur greater economic growth? Does extending unemployment benefits help or exacerbate the jobless situation?" (c3.thevoterguide.org)
  • Marc Veasey. Jobs. 8 June 2012. "As a staffer for Congressman Martin Frost, I played a key role in winning federal support needed to build the freeway exchange and road extensions at Cockrell Hill Road on I-30. Not only did that project create jobs, but the economic growth and development it produced served to create and retain even more jobs. In Fort Worth, I took the lead in bringing the only full service Super Market to southeast Fort Worth and played a key role in helping to make sure that what is now La Gran Plaza was not closed down. As a legislator, I fought to keep Republicans from decimating the Texas job economy by passing a foolish $164 billion budget proposal that would have cost our state hundreds of thousands of jobs over the next two years according to nonpartisan experts. Though I was successful in preventing those budget cuts from being as deep as Republicans tried to make them, Rick Perry and his Party were still able to force through $5.4 billion in cuts to public education. Make no mistake about it, the fight for jobs begins with education. We have to make sure the next generation is prepared. The key to a better economy and job creation lies with our children. I will work hand in hand with President Obama to help pass legislation that increases affordability of secondary education and primes students for entry into the workforce. If elected, I will also work with the President to pass legislation such as the JOBS Act in order to create an environment conducive to extending the twenty-seven straight months of job creation we've seen into the foreseeable future." • Marc Veasey. Dallas Morning News: 2012 My Ballot US House District 33. Responded "Congress should also continue to support President Obama, his policies and the American Jobs Act, in order to help restore the U.S. Economy." to the question: "The federal debt has passed $14 trillion and is growing. What strategies should Congress use to control its growth?" (c3.thevoterguide.org)

  • Marc Veasey. Dallas Morning News: 2012 My Ballot US House District 33. Responded "The law has not worked and Congress should discard significant portions of the law. As written, the law requires an undue amount of testing, which requires teachers to 'teach to the test' rather than teaching the true subject matter. Although it is important to retain some testing to ensure that high educational standards are being met, it is important that these test do not become the focus of day-to-day learning and that they do not become the sole measurement of a teacher's or student's success in the classroom." to the question: "The law authorizing No Child Left Behind has expired. Has that law worked? Should Congress keep or revise it? If so, how would you revise the law? If not, what should Washington do to ensure students aren't being left behind?" (c3.thevoterguide.org)
Unknown Position Unknown Answer Energy: Do you support reducing restrictions on offshore energy production? View Citations

Vote Smart's Research

  • Marc Veasey. Dallas Morning News: 2012 My Ballot US House District 33. Responded "Even if we tapped into every source of natural gas and oil in the United States, we would still remain too dependent on foreign energy sources. The long-term solution to this problem is the promotion of alternative energy, such as wind and solar power. Although these technologies may not be sufficient to power our world today, with time and investment, I am confident that they can solve many of our energy needs." to the question: "Some environmentalists criticize the way natural gas is produced in this country, including in North Texas. The Gulf of Mexico has energy reserves, but some critics don't want to drill there. And the debate over drilling in the upper reaches of Alaska remains a conflict between producers and environmentalists. How would you balance the need for greater energy resources with respect for the environment?" (c3.thevoterguide.org)

  • Marc Veasey. Statement from Rep. Veasey on SCOTUS Healthcare Ruling. 28 June 2012. "Today's decision is a victory for all Americans and I'm excited about the prospect of joining the fight in Congress to continue this work. America is now closer than ever to the day when no one need worry about the catastrophic consequences that can result from getting sick without insurance. However, there is much work to be done and, if elected, I will be proud to join our President in completing that work." (votesmart.org)

  • Marc Veasey. Rep. Veasey Statement on President's Dream Act Announcemen. 18 June 2012. "I have always been a staunch supporter of the DREAM Act and I am very proud of our President for taking this bold step. This is especially important in Texas because more than a fourth of the young people in this country who would benefit from this decision live here. Far too many young Hispanics, despite this being the only country they have ever known, have had to live in constant fear of deportation. They can now be free to pursue their education free of that fear. However, there are still obstacles keeping them from fully contributing to our society and that is why, if elected, I will fight alongside our President to make the full DREAM Act a reality." (votesmart.org)
  • Marc Veasey. Dallas Morning News: 2012 My Ballot US House District 33. Responded "I would support legislation, such as the DREAM Act, which would provide a path toward legalization and citizenship for undocumented young people, many of whom were brought to this country by no choice of their own and who have played by the rules the entire time they've resided in the U.S. I would also support expansion of temporary work Visas, while simultaneously supporting greater enforcement of our borders." to the question: "How would you, as a member of Congress, overhaul the nation's immigration laws? Please be specific." (c3.thevoterguide.org)
  • Marc Veasey. Immigration. 8 June 2012. "We need comprehensive immigration reform. We need a pathway to legalization for the hard-working men and women who have stayed out of trouble and are living in our communities in the shadows. When I first got elected to the state house, I promised I'd always fight against Republican anti-immigrant laws that target Latinos. I fought the Sanctuary City legislation that would have brought discriminatory Arizona style-immigration laws to Texas. I also fought against Republican efforts to repeal the state DREAM Act, which lets undocumented students that were raised in Texas go to college while paying in-state tuition rates. But, we need Congress to pass the federal DREAM Act so that these kids can work in their professions after graduation. It makes no sense that we are not tapping into their potential which will only better our state. However, President Obama can't pass legislation alone. He needs a Congress that will support comprehensive immigration reform and send that bill to his desk. If elected, I will be a champion in pushing for that immigration reform." (www.marcveasey.com)

  • Anna Waugh. Dallas Voice: Gays to have ˜huge say-so' in District 33. 5 April 2012. "Veasey, who represents state House District 95 that encompasses one-third of District 33, has proved to be an LGBT ally since his freshman year in the state House in 2005, when he voted against an amendment to the Texas Constitution banning same-sex marriage and civil unions. He also voted against an amendment banning gays from being foster parents. Thinking about the 'legacy that I would leave behind when I left the Texas Legislature,' Veasey said he voted against the anti-gay legislation because it was the right thing to do. Among the Democrats who was outspoken last year against a bill to ban LGBT resource centers on college campuses, Veasey also has authored a bill to study the effectiveness of the James Byrd Jr. Hate Crimes Act " which has been rarely used since it passed 10 years ago. If elected, Veasey said the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, which would prohibit anti-LGBT job bias, and the Student Non-Discrimination Act, which would ban harassment of LGBTˆstudents in public schools, would be priorities. 'Ever since I've been in the Legislature I've always had a 100 percent voting record on issues that affect the gay and lesbian community,' he said. Veasey also hired openly gay Kirk McPike as his chief of staff during two legislative sessions. McPike, who now works on the campaigns of other politicians, said Veasey was 'someone who can be an advocate to parts of the Democratic community who might not necessarily be as sympathetic to LGBT issues.'" • Author Unknown. Dallas Voice: Congressional District 33 candidates back ENDA, DOMA repeal at Stonewall Democrats forum. 28 March 2012. "State Rep. Marc Veasey, former state Rep. Domingo Garciaand former Dallas Councilman Steve Salazar were the three frontrunners in attendance at the forum [...] All six candidates said they support repealing the Defense of Marriage Act, in addition to passing an LGBT-inclusive Employment Non-Discrimination Act and Student Non-Discrimination Act."
