Vote Smart's Research

  • Charles Summers. Issue Position: Less Government Spending. 25 July 2012. "Congress seems to have lost contact with the interests of the American people when it comes to spending your hard-earned tax dollars. The limitless needs of special interests have led to ever- expanding demands for more government expenditures. Too often your tax dollars are poured into ill-conceived projects with no measurable results. This is leading to an increasing national debt and growing budget deficits. If government insists on taking a share of American's earnings it should ensure these dollars are put to good use. As your Congressman, Charlie will push for more accountable, common-sense approaches to public expenditure and that government spending is limited to meeting our most pressing needs." (votesmart.org)

Maine Congressional Election 2008 Political Courage Test

This candidate has responded to a Political Courage Test in a previous election. As a continued effort to provide the American public with factual information on candidates running for public office, these archived responses are made available here.

The Political Courage Test asks candidates which items they will support if elected. It does not ask them to indicate which items they will oppose. Through extensive research of public polling data, we discovered that voters are more concerned with what candidates would support when elected to office, not what they oppose. If a candidate does not select a response to any part or all of any question, it does not necessarily indicate that the candidate is opposed to that particular item.

Please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

First, we need a comprehensive energy plan that lowers costs in the short term and makes us as energy independent as possible in the long term. We must drill for more oil and natural gas here in America as a bridge to our energy future. Second, I support small business health plan legislation that allows small firms to pool together across state lines so that employees may purchase health insurance the way they do auto insurance. I support making the cost of health insurance 100% tax deductible for ALL Americans. Third, we need to make the recent tax cuts permanent.
