I'm a cosponsor of several pro-life bills pending before Congress, including the Right to Life Act (H.R. 618). I've also fought Democrat efforts to direct federal tax dollars towards abortion and deprive parents of informed consent when a minor child seeks an abortion. I'm also opposed to H.R. 1964. Proponents of this bill introduced it with the stated intention of overturning the Supreme Court ruling that upheld the ban on partial birth abortion - even though most Americans who are aware of the Court's decision support it." (votesmart.org)

I'm a consistent supporter of several pro-life bills pending in Congress. I'll also continue to fight efforts to direct federal tax dollars towards abortion or biomedical research that creates human life for the purpose of destruction." (votesmart.org)
  • Charles Boustany. Boustany Statement on Supreme Court Decision to Uphold Ban on Partial Birth Abortion. 18 April 2007. ""Today's ruling is a long awaited victory for the majority of Americans that oppose the horrible practice of partial-birth abortion. As a physician, I have dedicated my life to healing and nurturing human life. As a Member of Congress, I will continue to ensure that the right to life is never violated. I applaud the court for this decision, and I hope that it will lead to further advances in preserving the sanctity of human life." (votesmart.org)
  • Charles Boustany. Boustany Votes to Protect Human Life. 4 May 2011. "U.S. Congressman Charles W. Boustany, Jr., MD (R-Southwest Louisiana), a cardiothoracic surgeon with 20 years of experience, voted today to end taxpayer subsidies on abortions. Boustany, who has a long record of protecting life and fighting for pro-life legislation, joined his colleagues in passing the measure through the House of Representatives." (votesmart.org)

That's why I am pro-life and worked to prevent taxpayer and federal funds from being used to subsidize abortions. We need meaningful health care reform, but including funding for abortions simply should not be a part of a measure to lower health care costs." (votesmart.org)
  • Charles Boustany. Issue Position: Values. 18 November 2011. "As a pro-life physician, I believe it's wrong to destroy nescient human life, especially on the massive scale we've seen since the U.S. Supreme Court decided legalized abortion-on-demand in 1973." (votesmart.org)

  • Charles Boustany. Issue Position: National Defense and Iraq. 1 January 2011. "Last year President Obama also conducted a lengthy policy review resulting in the recommendation that a surge similar to the one in Iraq was necessary to secure Afghanistan. President Obama ordered an additional 30,000 troops be deployed to Afghanistan. It is too early to judge the success of the new strategy, but there are leading indicators that progress is being achieved. It will take time to secure and stabilize the Afghanistan and Pakistan region, but it is necessary. I will continue to support policies giving our Armed Forces and diplomats the tools and resources they need to be successful." (votesmart.org)
  • Charles Boustany. Issue Position: National Security. 18 November 2011. "The U.S. must build upon the successes in Iraq and work with our regional allies to bring about greater stability in Afghanistan. We must work together to create a system on handling suspected terrorists that follows the rule of law, without jeopardizing American lives." (votesmart.org)
  • Charles Boustany. Issue Position: National Security. 18 November 2011. "Violent extremists continue to bring new challenges to our Armed Forces and diplomatic corps around the world. Ongoing efforts in Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as growing instability in Pakistan, Lebanon, Gaza and West Bank, reinforce the need for continued involvement throughout East Asia and the Middle East. The U.S. must work with allied countries to bring the necessary resources to this region in order to achieve lasting peace and stability." (votesmart.org)

  • Charles Boustany. Boustany Supports Troop Increase in Afghanistan to Achieve Viable, Long-term Security. 2 December 2009. "We must never forget Afghanistan was the base for Al Qaeda's attacks on September 11, 2001. Achieving viable, long-term security in Afghanistan remains critical to U.S. national security, and I support the President's decision to increase the American troop level. To accomplish our mission there, additional troops are required for security, but they must be accompanied by sustainable development. We can achieve our goals in Afghanistan. However, an arbitrary timeline will serve only to embolden Al Qaeda and other terrorists in the region." (votesmart.org)

  • Charles Boustany. Boustany Comments on Two-Year Anniversary of Stimulus Package. 17 February 2011. "For two years we have waited for unemployment numbers to drop. For two years we have waited for our economy to rebound. For two years we have waited for the promises this administration made when they passed this ill-advised legislation. For two years we have been told the stimulus package is working, but it is not." (votesmart.org)
  • Charles Boustany. Boustany Reacts to President Obama's State of the Union. 26 January 2011. "Finally, the President spoke at length about jobs and the economy, but his solutions seem to include more rhetoric than actual solutions. The themes of job creation and job growth have been echoed in his previous State of the Union addresses, yet we still face 9.4% unemployment, a growing debt, a crumbling infrastructure and an economy that has not rebounded. The President's answer seemed to be "spend more', which has proven to be an unmitigated disaster with the failed stimulus plan of 2009. We need to take serious steps, make hard cuts in our spending, and keep the focus on job creation in this country so that America can rise to the occasion again and become that shining city on the hill once more." (votesmart.org)
  • Charles Boustany. Issue Position: Stopping Wasteful Spending. 18 November 2011. "While I wholeheartedly believe that adjustments need to be made in the way that we operate our government, I fundamentally disagree that more government spending and control is the solution. Congress needs to step back from its spending spree and thoroughly examine what works and what doesn't and create legislation that accurately reflects the needs of Americans -- not the bureaucratic organizations in Washington." (votesmart.org)
  • Charles Boustany. Taxes and Spending. 24 September 2012. "Congress prevented a massive $3.8 trillion tax hike from hitting all Americans this year - but Washington must end its spending binge and give U.S. job creators' certainty to hire new workers, rebuild our economy and compete in the global marketplace." (boustany.house.gov)

  • Charles Boustany. Putting Americans Back to Work. 17 March 2010. "Congress holds employers of all sizes hostage each year as lawmakers haggle over extending tax incentives critical to business decisions like hiring and investment. Certainty in our tax system will spur job creation and encourage taxpayers to work, save and invest. An important first step must be making the 2001 and 2003 tax relief measures permanent, including marginal rate reductions and capital investment incentives that create jobs by promoting long-term growth. Small businesses rely on these tax cuts to provide necessary capital to expand, hire new workers and compete globally." (boustany.house.gov)
  • Charles Boustany. Issue Position: Small Business. 18 November 2011. "Small businesses are the backbone of our economy, but they are too often overburdened by excessive regulation and taxation. Fundamental tax reform will provide a fairer and simpler system and will keep taxes at a reasonable rate. The tax relief packages of 2001 and 2003 created jobs and helped spur U.S. economic growth. I voted for the Tax Relief Act of 2005 to prevent many of these tax relief provisions from expiring, including small business expensing provisions and accelerated depreciation for leasehold properties and restaurants. I will continue to work diligently to ensure that these tax cuts are made permanent in the future." (votesmart.org)

  • Charles Boustany. Issue Position: Education. 18 November 2011. "The American education system is central to the success of our country and our future prosperity and I am dedicated to ensuring that we give our children the best education possible. America needs a system that empowers teachers, gives choice to parents, and encourages American children to become the best students in the world. We can begin by shifting decision-making power and money from Washington back to people who know the children's names." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeannine Lejeune. Acadia Parish Today: Boustany holds education roundtable. 1 January 2011. "The "Race to the Top" program also saw discussion throughout the roundtable. Louisiana missed out of the first round because not every school district enrolled. The state once again does not have 100 percent enrollment in the program due to state parameters. Of those in attendance, St. Landry Parish is still undecided, but Vermilion and Acadia parishes have already opted out. "Race to the Top" has four components: turn around, value-added, reconstitution and transformation. The state is requiring that school districts participating must participate in all four components in order to qualify, which is why St. Landry has reservations. Under the new guidelines, public schools in Louisiana not participating in the program must implement the new evaluation guidelines within three years, while those participating must do so immediately. According to Boustany, the state is "getting away from the basics" by doing these things and is getting in its own way in some cases education-wise." (www.crowleypostsignal.com)

It's a shame it took 219 years and a court ruling to affirm what seems to be so explicitly stated in the Constitution, but now that a verdict has been announced there can be no mistaking this is a right guaranteed to individual citizens of the United States." • Charles Boustany. Issue Position: Louisiana Values. 18 November 2011. "I believe marriage is the most fundamental institution of our society, and it should not be redefined by activist judges. Since 1996, large majorities of voters have passed referendums that uphold the traditional definition of marriage. Forty five of the 50 states have either a state constitutional amendment or statute defining marriage as a union of a man and a woman. Most Americans remain opposed to same-sex marriages and believe states should not be forced to recognize these unions as marriage. In spite of this fact, judges in at least four states have already ruled against state laws that protect the definition of marriage. Last year, nine other states faced similar lawsuits. I support a Constitutional amendment that would effectively prevent the further undermining of marriage by our nation's courts." (votesmart.org)
  • Charles Boustany. Issue Position: Values. 18 November 2011. "I believe marriage and families are the fundamental building block of our society. The use of federal property or federal employees to perform anything but opposite-sex ceremonies is a clear contravention of the law." (votesmart.org)
