  • NARAL Pro-Choice America. 04/18/2012. "Jeff Flake supported the interests of the NARAL Pro-Choice America 0 percent in 2010." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Protect Life Act. "I rise in support of H.R. 358, the Protect Life Act, of which I'm a cosponsor. It's been the practice of this House for decades to ensure that federal funds are not used for abortion except in rare cases of rape, incest, or to save the life of the mother. This is typically done by attaching language to appropriation bills that go through this House. Unfortunately, we don't always have regular order." (votesmart.org)
  • National Organization for Women. 04/18/2012. "On the votes used to calculate its ratings, the National Organization for Women attaches more value to those votes it considers more important. For 2008, the National Organization for Women gave Jeff Flake a rating of 0 percent." (votesmart.org)

"Congressman Flake Applauds Supreme Court Decision Upholding Partial Birth Abortion Ban Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona's Sixth District, today applauded the decision by the United States Supreme Court upholding the partial birth abortion ban. 'I'm glad that the Supreme Court has confirmed that banning this gruesome practice is well within the bounds of the Constitution,' said Flake. 'No one should consider this gruesome procedure a constitutional right.'" (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Congressman Flake Supports Pence Amendment to Prohibit Funds to Planned Parenthood. 17 February 2011. "Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona's Sixth District, today voiced his support for amendment #11 to H.R. 1 sponsored by Congressman Mike Pence. The amendment will prohibit funds for any purpose to be directed toward Planned Parenthood. It's long been known that Planned Parenthood is the largest recipient of federal family planning funds, despite the fact that federal law specifically prohibits funds to be used for programs that designate abortion as a method of family planning. I strongly support Mike Pence's effort to prohibit funding for Planned Parenthood, and I will look for opportunities as a member of the Appropriations Committee to strike further funding for Planned Parenthood. (votesmart.org)

  • Jeff Flake. Congressman Flake Comments on President Obama's Decision to Relieve General McChrystal and Reassign General Petraeus. 23 June 2010. "Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, a member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, today released the following statement in response to President Obama's decision to relieve General Stanley McChrystal of his duties and replace him with General David Petraeus. "I hope that President Obama uses this change to reevaluate his overall strategy in Afghanistan," said Flake. "I have enormous confidence in General Petraeus, but even the most competent commander can only implement a mismatched strategy with limited results. There needs to be a greater focus on counter-terrorism efforts there, as opposed to the present focus on counter-insurgency." (votesmart.org)
  • Peace Action. 04/18/2012. "Jeff Flake supported the interests of the Peace Action 38 percent in 2010." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. 2012 Phoenix Arizona Election Questionnaire for Congress. Responded "I support a counter-terrorism, rather than a counter-insurgency, strategy in Iraq and Afghanistan. A counter-terrorism strategy would allow the U.S. to meet our objectives in that region while decreasing our footprint." to the question: "What should be the U.S. policy toward Iraq and Afghanistan moving forward?" www.azcentral.com/news/politics/2012questionnaires/results.php?id=barberr
  • Jeff Flake. H Con Res 28. 112th Congress. Removing Troops from Afghanistan. Jeff Flake voted Nay on 03/17/2011. (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Issue Position: National Security. 1 January 2012. "I voted to authorize support for military engagements in Afghanistan and Iraq. I have also routinely voted against measures to precipitously withdraw forces from those two operations and for amendments that would deny the resources needed to achieve success. The capture and killing of Osama bin Laden is evidence that the men and women serving our country in our armed forces are among the best and brightest warfighters in the world. I opposed a broad Democratic effort to defund military operations in Afghanistan, including important counterinsurgency funds. I also opposed cuts to the Afghanistan Infrastructure Fund, the Iraq Security Forces Fund, and the Commander's Emergency Response Program in Afghanistan." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Issue Position: Iraq and Afghanistan. 5 July 2011. "While many challenges still remain in Iraq, over the past several months, progress has been made in Iraq that will hopefully allow us to begin drawing down force levels. The Iraqi government is finally training its own forces at a quickened pace and there has been progress on the political front as well. In Afghanistan, recent events have not been so promising. The Taliban seems to be resurgent, financed by a drug trade that has not been diminished. We must step up efforts, along with our NATO allies, to ensure that Afghanistan doesn't again become a country from which terrorist attacks against the United States and its allies can be directed." (votesmart.org)
  • Peace Action West. 04/18/2012. "Jeff Flake supported the interests of Peace Action West 38 percent in 2010." (votesmart.org)

  • Jeff Flake. H Amdt 13. 112th Congress. Reducing Navy and Air Force Aircraft Procurement. Jeff Flake voted Nay on 02/15/2011. (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Issue Position: National Security. 1 January 2012. "My commitment to the troops and our mission is unshakeable. My support, however, for these operations and for our military personnel does not mean that there aren't expenses to cut in the Defense Department. In fact, billions of dollars in wasteful congressional earmarks and continued extraneous spending in defense spending measures, not all of which is even related to the nation's defense, has led me to vote against those measures. We simply cannot afford to continue to ignore the enormous amount of deficit spending and the crushing debt that is continually added." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. The Hill - For Flake and Campbell, FY 2011 Did Not Cut Far Enough. 22 February 2011. "Reps. John Campbell (R-Calif.) and Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.) were two of just three Republicans who voted against the Republican spending bill for fiscal year 2011, and said they did so because the cuts -- hotly contested by Democrats -- did not go far enough. 'I didn't vote for the CR [continuing resolution] because it simply didn't go far enough to reduce spending,' Flake told The Hill. 'We've got to make much deeper cuts to get out of the fiscal hole we're in.' Flake had several amendment proposals to the spending bill, but most were rejected, including the first amendment to the bill that was offered. That amendment would have cut $19 million in Defense Department funding for advisory boards and commissions, but while Defense itself has said this cut should happen, the House narrowly voted to keep the money." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Congressman Flake Votes Against War Supplemental Spending Bill. 20 June 2008. "Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona's Sixth District, voted against the emergency supplemental appropriations bill, which contained funding for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan as well as funding for other measures. The bill was separated into two amendments - the first amendment contained funding for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan and the second amendment contained funding for an expanded GI benefit, disaster relief, and other extraneous spending. Congressman Flake voted against the first amendment because he objected to using an emergency supplemental bill to fund war operations. An emergency supplemental bill is not subject to the budget constraints and authorization that it would receive under the normal budget process. 'We're in the sixth year of this war,' said Flake. 'We knew last year that we'd need to fund the war this year, just as we know this year that we'll need to fund the war next year. There's no reason why this funding shouldn't go through the normal budget process. Designating it as 'emergency spending' just isn't an honest way to spend money.'" (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Full-Year Continuing Appropriations Act, 2011. 15 February 2011. "This amendment would reduce by $18.57 million the operations and maintenance defense-wide account. It would send the money to the spending reduction account. We are often told that when we offer amendments like this on the floor, it is not going to save any money. This one does. The money that is saved here will go to the spending reduction account. Last August, Secretary Gates ordered a review of all outside boards and commissions that provide advice and studies to the Defense Department with an eye toward eliminating unnecessary entities and cutting funding for the studies that they produce by 25 percent. According to CRS, the Department of Defense funds 65 boards and commissions at a cost of about $75 million. This amendment would achieve the approximate savings that Secretary Gates sought for FY 2011 that would equal $18.75 million. That is 25 percent of the $75 million over time. I certainly don't have any problems with the various panels from which the Defense Department seeks counsel, but I am sure there is some waste there. That is why Secretary Gates has targeted a 25 percent reduction. I realize the amount of savings in this amendment is relatively small compared to the overall defense budget, but I think the point has to be made here that the defense budget is not sacrosanct. We can't say if it is defense, it is all good; that there is no waste here, we can't cut any[...] Again, passing this amendment will reduce funding that will not impact the warfighter. It won't impact the war in Afghanistan or the war still going on in Iraq. This would simply signal that this body is willing to cut where we can cut without affecting the necessary protections that we have in the Department of Defense." (votesmart.org)

"I pledge to the taxpayers of the state of Arizona and to the American people that I will: ONE, oppose any and all efforts to increase the marginal income tax rate for individuals and business; and TWO, oppose any net reduction or elimination of deductions and credits, unless matched dollar for dollar by further reducing tax rates." • Jeff Flake. HR 1424. 110th Congress. Financial Asset Purchase Authority and Tax Law Amendments. Jeff Flake voted Nay on 10/03/2008. (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Issue Position: Economy. July 1, 2011. "Not only is our rate of spending on entitlements -- like Medicare and Social Security -- unsustainable, but we have also increased so-called discretionary spending at an unprecedented rate. Now that the Democrats are in charge in Congress, maybe we Republicans can rediscover our roots in limited government. The free market is the most efficient means of allocating capital and human resources. The recent bailouts (auto bailout, AIG bailout, Wall Street bailout) are inconsistent with this principle. Not only are we heaping mounds of debt on future generations but, by inserting government so deeply into the private sector, we are making future economic growth far more difficult." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. U.S. Mayors Ready Pork For Stimulus. December 19, 2008. "Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona's Sixth District, today urged Congress not to include pork projects when it considers an economic stimulus bill early next year. 'If pork-barrel spending stimulated the economy, we wouldn't be in a recession right now,' said Flake. 'Pro-growth tax cuts would be a more effective economic stimulus than pork projects.' The U.S. Conference of Mayors has released a list of pork projects that are 'ready to go' if funding is included in the stimulus." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Congressman Flake Files Amendments To Stimulus Bill. January 27, 2011. "Congressman Flake does not support the stimulus as currently drafted. He favors an alternative offered by the Republican Study Committee which relies on tax cuts, rather than government spending, to stimulate the economy." (votesmart.org)
  • The Club for Growth. 04/18/2012. "On the votes used to calculate its ratings, The Club for Growth attaches more value to those votes it considers more important. For 2010, The Club for Growth gave Jeff Flake a rating of 100 percent." (votesmart.org)

  • Americans for Prosperity. 04/18/2012. "Jeff Flake supported the interests of the Americans for Prosperity 100 percent in 2010." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Congressman Flake Urges Democrats Not To Use Stimulus As Model For Jobs Bill. November 17, 2009. "Moving a jobs bill next month is a concession that the stimulus bill has failed to create jobs [¦] "Let's not add injury to insult by using the stimulus as a model when crafting a jobs bill. As the stimulus has proven, increasing federal spending will not create jobs. We ought to cut corporate tax rates and let a growing economy create jobs. At the very least, the unemployment rate should give Democrats pause as they move ahead with their healthcare bill. The prospect of that bill becoming law is creating enough uncertainty among businesses, particularly small businesses, that job creation will be a very difficult task." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Providing For Consideration Of H.R. 4899, Disaster Relief And Summer Jobs Act Of 2010. March 24, 2010. "We borrowed the stimulus. We borrowed the stimulus money. We are borrowing nearly 40 percent of the money that we're spending here at the Federal level. So they'll say, ``Oh, yes. This is being taken from another program that's already funded.'' But you have to realize we're borrowing that money, too. So $600 million to create temporary jobs for kids in the summertime, apparently, with no notion that we may have put a lot of people out of work with what we just did earlier this week. You know, we pass a lot of laws here. We're good at that. But we aren't very good at suspending the laws of economics. We can't do that [¦] We can't suspend the laws of economics, and we can't phase them in, either. So when you announce that you're going to tax investment capital, that means there's less investment capital to actually invest in job creating activities. So the job creating sector is smaller than it was before. Whenever you take money into government from the job creating sector, when you tax investment capital, like the health care reform that we did, that means there's going to be less capital for job creation." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Providing for Consideration of H.R. 7110, Job Creation and Unemployment Relief Act of 2008. September 26, 2008. "This has been quite a week, Mr. Speaker. I would venture to say that this is the most expensive week in the history of the Republic. I don't think anything ever will even come close to this in a number of years. We are talking about a $700 billion bailout [¦] Gratefully, this stimulus package isn't going anywhere. The Senate already tried to pass something and failed. And so this as a vehicle is not going anywhere. And people around the country should be very grateful for that. We call it a stimulus bill. I thank the gentleman [¦] I didn't like the last stimulus bill we passed here in Congress. And I didn't vote for it. But to call this `stimulus' is a real stretch. People at home want to keep more of their own money and not send it to Washington and then to have Washington turn around and say, well, I think that what we really need and what we needed to take your money for in the first place was so we can spend another $500 million in Amtrak for Amtrak projects, or another billion for transit and energy assistance grants, or $3 billion for green school improvements. I don't think anybody sitting at home thinks that that is very stimulating at all. I think they would be much more stimulated if you let them keep the money they have." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. HR 2. 108th Congress. Jobs and Economic Growth bill. Jeff Flake voted Yea on 05/23/2003. (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Issue Position: Education. July 1, 2011. "Congressman Flake believes that education is a local issue and ought to be handled at the local level. He has opposed attempts to expand the reach of the federal government into education, including voting against the No Child Left Behind Act. In 2003, he played a pivotal role in creating a scholarship program for children in failing schools in Washington, D.C., where the federal government has jurisdiction over education." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. H Amdt 773. 112th Congress. Ending Moratorium on Deepwater Drilling Rigs that Meet Certain Safety Standards. Jeff Flake voted Nay on 07/30/2010. (votesmart.org)

  • Jeff Flake. Comprehensive American Energy Security and Consumer Protection Act. 16 September 2008. "If we had a serious piece of legislation that would provide for allowing us to exploit our own resources, it would allow States to share in the revenue generated by offshore drilling. Without allowing that, you simply guarantee that no State will opt in. So there is a lot of bait and switch here going on [...] Again, this is not a serious piece of legislation. It is meant to provide political cover. It should be rejected. And, hopefully, as the moratorium goes off, we will get to really addressing our energy future." (votesmart.org)
  • Jeff Flake. Restarting American Offshore Leasing Now Act. 9 May 2011. "The bottom line is that it will make it easier for us to become more energy independent, not completely energy independent--it can't go that far--but it will make us more independent than we were before. It will create an environment where jobs can be created by the private sector. It will help, over time, to lower the price of gasoline because it will create more supply in the end. That's what it does. It doesn't put a big oil rig on the top of Medicare and suck money from our seniors. Come on. This is just a measure to help the situation, to make it better. We've locked off too many areas to oil drilling, and we've not exploited our own supply enough to help bring down price and to help consumers out there in the world. So that's all this does, and I commend the gentleman for bringing it forward. I urge support for it." (votesmart.org)

  • Jeff Flake. Congressman Flake Criticizes Cap and Trade Bill. 26 June 2009. "Republican Congressman Jeff Flake, who represents Arizona's Sixth District, criticized the cap and trade bill that passed today. "The last thing a fragile economy needs is a new energy tax, yet that's essentially what this cap and trade bill is," said Flake. "This bill is more about generating revenue for the federal government than it is about addressing climate change." Unfortunately, Congressman Flake was unable to vote on the bill due to a family obligation. Congressman Flake's daughter was Arizona's representative in the America's Junior Miss scholarship program, and Congressman Flake and his wife were there supporting her." (flake.house.gov)

Based on your solid and consistent pro-gun voting record, you have earned an "A" rating from the NRA-PVF [¦] In the 112th Congress, you voted for H.R. 822, 'The National Right to Carry Reciprocity Act,' one of the most important pieces of pro-gun legislation to come before the Congress. This bill would ensure law-abiding Americans with a valid concealed handgun license would be able to carry their concealed firearm in any other state that does not prohibit concealed carry [¦] In addition, you sponsored H.R. 3440, the 'Recreational Shooting Protection Act,' to prevent a ban on recreational shooting on Bureau of Land Management lands nationwide. This bill was included in a legislative package, H.R. 4089, the 'Sportsmen's Heritage Act of 2012,' that favorably passed the House of Representatives 274-146. H.R. 4089 is a compilation of legislation meant to ensure the rights of hunters and recreational shooters are not further eroded [¦] Again, thank you for your unwavering support for the Second Amendment." The Democratic majority in Congress adjourned for August, but many House Republicans have stayed behind and continue to debate energy policy. • Jeff Flake. Repealing the Job-Killing Health Care Law Act. January 19, 2011. "There are claims that repealing Obamacare would lead to massive deficits because it is supposedly paid for, but I would like to point out one item that was intended to raise revenues in order to help pay for the health care law that is already facing repeal. The healthcare bill includes a requirement that small businesses file a report every time they spend more than $600. This filing requirement went into effect at the end of last year and I am among a considerable bipartisan effort seeking to repeal it." (votesmart.org)

Along with Congressman Luis Gutierrez of Illinois, he has introduced the STRIVE Act (H.R. 1645), which would increase border security, strengthen interior enforcement, create a temporary worker program, and deny amnesty to illegal immigrants." • Jeff Flake. Providing for Further Consideration of H.R. 4437, Border Protection, Antiterrorism, and Illegal Immigration Control Act of 2005. 16 December 2005. "The elephant in the middle of the room is the 11 million illegal aliens who have already entered the country. Without a temporary worker program we will continue to turn a blind eye to their existence. We'll pretend they aren't here. It would be the equivalent to rounding up the entire population of the State of Ohio and sending them back to their home country. Yet that is what ``enforcing the current law'' would require."
