The fact is that by its very nature and by the fact that it's controlling decisions that weren't controlled before by the federal government, we are bound to make decisions that people don't want but also decisions that large numbers of people think are immoral. And it is, it is wrong to force someone who believes that abortion is the taking of a human life, to force them in some way to pay for it or to have to participate in a health care system that provides for that service. • Dana Rohrabacher. Rohrabacher: "Administration's Current Afghanistan Policy Will Not Work" Joins Lawmakers Asking For Exit Strategy Report. 18 May 2009. "Congressman Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) has joined seventy-four lawmakers as an original co-sponsor of H.R. 2404, requiring the Secretary of Defense to submit a report by the end of the year to Congress outlining the United States' exit strategy for military forces in Afghanistan participating in Operation Enduring Freedom. On May 14th, Rep. Rohrabacher gave a speech on the House floor expressing heavy skepticism of the Obama administration's current plan for Afghanistan. 'It won't work,' said Rohrabacher. 'The structure the administration is trying to set up for its operations in Afghanistan is contrary to the traditions and culture of the Afghan people, particularly their own tribal and militia system. Furthermore, it downplays the role of opium production in financing the radical Islamic elements in the region. The policy is fundamentally flawed. Our military deserves those of us on the political and diplomatic end of the fight to do the job this administration is failing to do. If we're going to keep sending troops over there, we better make sure they have a program that can succeed.'" (votesmart.org)
  • Dana Rohrabacher. Congressman Rohrabacher supports Iraqi Supplemental Appropriations Legislation. 16 March 2005. "Our military forces in Iraq and Afghanistan continue to do their jobs in the harshest of environments. This bill continues our support of their work and recognizes the sacrifices they are making to ensure our security and to further the march of freedom. The men and women in uniform deserve our unwavering support and the funding in this legislation provides needed equipment and protection. This bill also provides significant funding for the training of Iraqi and Afghani security forces to defend their own homelands. The training of these forces will be the quickest and safest way to bring our troops home - a day that all of us look forward to. Finally, the bill increases the death gratuity payment and the life insurance cap for troops who are killed in the war on terror. No amount of money will ever replace the life of a loved one and the potential that life offered to this world. The least we can do is adjust a glaringly out of date gratuity amount for the ultimate sacrifice of our military heroes." (votesmart.org)

  • Dana Rohrabacher. An Alternative Course In Afghanistan. 3 March 2009. "We must build up the strength and role of indigenous forces in our drive for victory in Afghanistan and deliver on the promises we made to the Afghans decades ago when their fierce resistance, with our aid, led to the signal defeat of Soviet forces and helped end the Cold War. But policy flaws, rather like those that turned liberation into quagmire in Iraq, may well undermine our renewed efforts in Afghanistan as President Obama shifts the U.S. focus away from Iraq. We need to recognize that 'boots on the ground' are not the primary factor of success [¦] In Iraq, contrary to what the military mavens claim, a lack of policy, not a lack of manpower, turned victory into four years of mayhem. Our amazing initial success in Afghanistan, in contrast, was due to relying on an established local power base, the Northern Alliance, a loose-knit yet powerful alternative to the Taliban and al Qaeda." (votesmart.org)
  • Dana Rohrabacher. Issue Position: National Security. 8 February 2012. "Representative Rohrabacher is solidly behind America's armed forces, and America's efforts to defeat radical Islam, tyranny, and the sponsors of terrorism. Long recognized for his expertise in Afghanistan, Dana was the strongest voice in the Congress, demanding action against Bin Laden and the Taliban long before 9-11. He was personally involved in creating and then rallying support behind what became the Northern Alliance. Former Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld has praised Congressman Rohrabacher for his contributions in the War on Terror and in playing "a significant role in helping to develop the effort for driving out radical Islam and the Taliban Regime from Afghanistan in 2001." (votesmart.org)
  • Dana Rohrabacher. Rep. Rohrabacher Statement on President Obama's Afghanistan Troop Withdrawl Announcment. 22 June 2011. "Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) issued the following statement in reaction to President Obama's forthcoming formal announcement of plans to begin a drawdown of U.S. troops in Afghanistan beginning this summer and ending in 2014: 'If we're going to leave, we should leave [¦] It's a disservice to those many American families who will continue to suffer the loss of a family member who is maimed or killed during the wind down of this war. President Obama is trying to have it both ways. If you're going to get out…get out. The centralized system of government foisted upon the Afghan people is not going to hold after we leave [¦] So let's quit prolonging the agony and inevitable. Karzai's regime is corrupt and non representative of Afghanistan's tribal culture. This failed strategy is not worth one more drop of American blood. Under the current strategy, our military presence alienates more Afghans that it pacifies. So if you're going to pull the plug, then we need to get the hell out now.'" (votesmart.org)

He knew that, if we spent this money for defense now, that later on, we wouldn't have to spend it because we could bring peace to the world, which is exactly what happened, which permitted, of course, Clinton, the Clinton administration to cut defense spending and balance the budget. Now this president is faced with another international crisis and we are making an investment in long-term peace. And, hopefully, after we are successful in overcoming this horrendous challenge of radical Islam, we will be able to not have to spend so much Money on defense again." (votesmart.org)
  • Dana Rohrabacher. Rohrabacher Statement On Proposed Defense Cuts, Including The C-17. 7 April 2009. "Congressman Dana Rohrabacher has issued the following statement regarding his opposition to Defense Secretary Robert Gates' announcement of major defense funding cuts including Boeing's C-17 military cargo plane manufactured in Long Beach, CA. Ending production would directly cost approximately 6,000 jobs, not including subcontractors. 'It's absurd that this administration would be spending billions to allegedly stimulate the economy with temporary jobs while canceling aerospace contracts that are currently providing thousands of high quality jobs, particularly in southern California. It totally reflects a distorted value system. I recently visited Afghanistan and Iraq and there's no doubt that the C-17 is a workhorse that keeps our troops safe and enables them to get the job done. Why would the Administration be in favor of pulling the plug on such a valuable program that already employs thousands of people? It's better to spend the money on programs like the C-17 than spending hundreds of billions of dollars bailing out Wall Street cronies.'" (votesmart.org)

Uhler announced the presentation of the award recently in Washington, DC, saying, 'Congressman Rohrabacher has led the battle on behalf of the taxpayers to make the 2001 and 2003 tax cuts permanent, eliminate the death tax, to kill the Alternative Minimum Tax, to eliminate the 1993 tax increase on Social Security earnings, to provide incentives for private savings, investment and job creation and to control the growth of federal spending. Congressman Rohrabacher has been a major asset to taxpayers across America during his congressional service. He has had the courage to challenge the orthodoxy of Washington spending and earmarks,' concluded Uhler. "The following press statement was released by this office on September 29, 2008, regarding the $700 BILLION bailout package proposed to Congress. Congressman Rohrabacher voted NO on this bill, along with a majority of his Republican colleagues and 95 Democrats. An overwhelming number of constituents flooded Congressman Rohrabacher's offices expressing their vehement opposition to the bailout. Although there may be some who disagree, Congressman Rohrabacher stands by his "NO" vote and believes that decision was the best way to safeguard the taxpayers from a massive government spending bill being rushed through Congress without proper debate or examination. 'Today's vote reaffirms the independence of Congress and makes it clear that we will not be stampeded into spending hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars in a precipitous manner. This legislation would have directed $700 billion of the people's money to bailout rich and powerful interests who acted irresponsibly. • Dana Rohrabacher. Rohrabacher: SOTU Most Blatant Display Of Gall Ever Witnessed. 27 January 2010. "President Obama gave a highly political campaign style speech, full of contradictions and rhetoric. His claims of more transparency, earmark reform and bipartisanship sounded more like word confetti considering the actions of this administration over the last year were quite the contrary. Very few people, except the president apparently, can keep a straight face while calling for fiscal responsibility after presiding over $1.4 trillion in deficit spending, an unprecedented level. This is a deficit our children will be paying interest on forever. The president has spent almost $800 billion on a so called stimulus package, yet unemployment remains over 10% nationally and 12.4% in CA and almost 3 million jobs have been lost since the President Obama took office. This proves you cannot spend your way out of a recession, yet he continues to propose more spending. Furthermore, Obama tried to position himself as an adversary of big bankers and corporate greed after transferring hundreds of billions of taxpayer dollars to America's financial elite and Wall Street fat cats." They are making their pristine beaches more vulnerable to spills because a tanker has about a 500 percent greater chance of spilling oil than does an offshore oil rig [¦] The price of oil is high, gasoline is high because the supply is down. The supply is down because there is a coalition between the liberal left and radical environmentalists that have prevented any type of new supply from being developed in the last 30 years. It's as simple as that. The money being extracted from our pockets at the pump is a result of the lack of supply. The idea that pristine beaches are going to be threatened by offshore oil rigs has been used to diminish supply and increase the price of oil at the pump. I have represented a southern California coastal district for 18 years. There has never been an oil spill caused by an offshore rig, and we have had offshore oil drilling off my district for decades. The one spill we had that polluted our coast came from a tanker. Those who vote against offshore oil development are basically making us more dependent on tankers, which are dramatically more likely to spill oil upon our shores." (votesmart.org)

"What we need to do is make sure that we develop clean energy sources, not because of global warming but because of the health of our children. And also, we need to be independent of foreign sources. The fact is that foreign sources of oil, because we are not developing our own oil resources as a result of the dynamics created by the global warming juggernaut that we have been experiencing, the fact is that we have not drilled for our own oil. We have not focused on real alternatives to energy like nuclear energy. The fact is that we need to make sure right now that we do our very best not to be captured by this, what I consider to be one of the greatest hoaxes that I have seen in my lifetime, but instead focus our efforts on accomplishing something that is real and positive for the people of the world and the people of the United States of America. It really takes a lot to frighten people into accepting such personally restrictive mandates that would result from implementing a global warming-based agenda. People's lives will change if we decide to implement a global warming-based agenda. Yes, people's lives will change, but not for the better if we have to end, for example, discount airline tickets and cheap travel." (votesmart.org)
  • Dana Rohrabacher. Issue Position: Global Warming. 10 February 2012. "In 2001, over 17,000 scientists signed a petition asking the United States government to not agree to the Kyoto treaty. These distinguished researchers said: 'There is no convincing scientific evidence that human release of carbon dioxide, methane, or other greenhouse gasses is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth's atmosphere and disruption of the Earth's climate.' Too often, when congress is asked to pass environmental legislation, the legislation is based on emotional junk science rather than data based on reproducable, rigorous, tested, peer-reviewed results. In no area has this been more obvious than climate change. Because the Kyoto Treaty and much of the suggested environmental legislation would decimate jobs in southern California, constituents may be interested to learn of the growing scientific consensus that global warming is not manmade, if it is in fact even occuring. "By declaring CO2 a pollutant, a threat to human health, they have empowered the EPA to issue orders, mandates, regulations, controls, and fines which will be put in place and enforced even without a vote of Congress, unelected officials declaring themselves as having this enormous power over us. This bypassing of the authority of Congress is a manifestation of tyranny. I don't care if they think that they are saving the world. This is tyranny. If there are changes in the law that are required by some climate theory, let us debate them, have an honest debate. Let's not impose this on the American people without having elected officials be held accountable for that decision. And, of course, we know now the theories that we're talking about are all based on the cooked books and phony science, which makes it all even worse [¦] Wake up, America. We should not be giving more power to United Nation panels or anybody else or any other institution internationally that is composed of governments that are controlled by gangsters and thugs that we would never dream of electing here in the United States, countries that don't have any freedom of press. We're going to give authority to enforce environmental laws and rules that we've never voted on to bodies like that? Or we're going to go along with the EPA and push the Congress aside and elected officials aside and let that be imposed upon us by people who have never been elected to anything? No. We must stand up and defeat this power grab." (votesmart.org)
  • Dana Rohrabacher. The Fear Of Global Warming. 18 March 2009. "Mr. Speaker, this old world has had many cycles of warming and cooling, influenced by solar activity, volcanoes, even forest fires and many other natural factors. The ice caps on Mars and Jupiter go back and forth, just as glaciers have gone back and forth. But such a powerful and mysterious force as the weather can be frightening. We need not fear the thunder, and we need not fear climate cycles. We need not be frightened, hoodwinked into giving away our own freedom. Not to our own government, much less the U.N. or a global power--the power to control our lives in the name of man-made global warming, or climate change, or whatever they want to call it. We cannot allow the alarmists to take this country down the wrong path. Let us pass on to the children of this country and the planet, let us give them the freedom and prosperity we enjoyed. We must not allow our future to be stolen by hucksters who would frighten us into giving up our birthright in the name of saving the planet. It sounds good and noble, as most scams do, but it is just a trick, a hoax. Let's not get taken in by the greatest hoax of all." (votesmart.org)

We keep hearing about how people are being cost out of the market; they can't afford their health care, but it does not decrease health care costs. In fact, the bill would increase the cost of health care in the form of higher premiums and exorbitant new taxes on families. Furthermore, it will not prevent funds from going to illegal aliens or abortions. So that's what it doesn't do. What does it do? Well, this legislation will make sure the American people are more addicted to socialism because we will be more dependent on the Federal bureaucracy. What it will do is create a $1 trillion new program, even when we can't afford the current programs [¦] Let's come forward with what we believe in and how to make the system better and work together. But we have to start by voting 'no' on this legislation." (votesmart.org)

"Unlike this government takeover being pushed by my Democratic colleagues, Republicans have offered solutions to fundamentally reform this nation's health care system, instead of transforming healthcare into a bureaucratic nightmare. Unfortunately, Democrats have only paid lip service to the many ideas that both Republicans and Democrats could support. The only bipartisanship we've seen here is bipartisan opposition to the Democrat's health care power play. They are scrambling for votes, even though they have a huge majority. This should tell you the radical nature of this legislation. I will vote No and urge my colleagues on the other side of the aisle to do the same. Let's start over and put in place reforms that do not need backroom deals and arm twisting in order to pass." (votesmart.org)

The process put forth by the Democrats has made a mockery of all the pledges by the President of bipartisanship and transparency. I don't know of any other legislation as consequential as this passed with such a partisan sledgehammer. This trillion dollar monstrosity is not only an attack on every American's freedom but will increase taxes and deficit spending in the middle of a recession when we cannot even afford the government programs we already have, all without bringing down health care costs. This legislation is not the health care reform the American people want or deserve. All this will do is addict the American people to socialism and make us dependent on the federal bureaucracy.'" He is a big supporter of E-Verify: A system that will permit employers to determine the immigration status of potential employees. Representative Rohrabacher advocates cutting off all government benefits to those who are in our country illegally. He also supports strengthening the border and holding employers accountable for hiring illegals. He believes that such a policy would result in a large number of illegals going home voluntarily. He also believes it is immoral to use our limited education and health resources to help those who are here illegally at the expense of U.S. citizens and legal residents." (votesmart.org)
  • Dana Rohrabacher. Issue Position: Stopping Crime, Including Illegal Immigration. 8 February 2012. "Congressman Rohrabacher sees illegal immigration as one of the greatest threats to the well being of the American people. He has been one of the most active members in Congress on the issue. He was an early supporter and spokesman for Proposition 187. In Washington, he has authored bills to prevent illegals from receiving any government assistance, including Social Security. While uncompromisingly against illegals, Dana has worked hard to prevent legal immigrants from being hurt in the process. Legal immigrants deserve every right, privilege and protection as citizens, which many of them have become. Illegal immigrants, in contrast, should be deported … sent home." (votesmart.org)
  • Dana Rohrabacher. Letter to President Obama. 9 September 2011. "Over the last several years, with the support of the American public, Congress has consistently defeated amnesty proposals for illegal aliens. This recent effort appears to be nothing more than an attempt to avoid public review and unilaterally impose amnesty by picking and choosing which laws to enforce; or in this case, not to enforce, thereby enabling illegal aliens to remain in the country. In addition, we are convinced the consequences of implementing this policy, will include, but certainly not be limited to, the loss of public confidence and the encouragement of future illegal immigration. Even prior to this, the American public's confidence in the Administration to address illegal immigration was tenuous at best. This is evidenced by the number of states that have initiated and passed their own immigration enforcement laws. This shift in policy confirms the general public suspicion that the Administration is not serious about controlling illegal immigration." (votesmart.org)
  • Dana Rohrabacher. Representative Rohrabacher Signs Onto Anti-Illegal Immigration Bill. 25 July 2005. "Rep. Dana Rohrabacher recently signed on as an original co-sponsor of H.R. 3095, The New Illegal Deduction Elimination Act (New IDEA). The bill would make wages and benefits paid to illegal aliens nondeductible for federal tax purposes. 'When many people talk about illegal immigration, they talk about a bigger fence and more border patrol agents. The truth is, the only way we will win the battle against illegal immigration is by cutting off the incentive for illegal aliens to come here," said Rep. Rohrabacher. "Businesses must be accountable for who they employ. There is a simple way for them to check the validity of Social Security numbers through the Basic Pilot Program that instantly connects them to the Social Security Administration and the Department of Homeland Security. In this day and age, there is simply no excuse for employing someone of questionable legal status. This no longer just a matter of economic security, it is a matter of national security. This bill will provide economic consequences for businesses that knowingly employ illegal aliens who are a drain on the system and provide cover for terrorists trying to enter the U.S.'" (votesmart.org)
  • Dana Rohrabacher. Rohrabacher Reaction to Obama's Immigration Speech. 1 July 2010. "President Obama did not present anything new to the American people. He offered plenty of platitudinous doublespeak in an attempt to mask his real intentions. The bottom line is the president still wants to grant people here illegally immediate legal status so they can stay. That has always been one of the major stumbling blocks to reform. That's not reform-that's surrender. If we once again legalize their status with no perceivable consequence, the message will be out that you can still come to the U.S. illegally with the hope of eventually being granted legal status. Illegal immigration will only increase, as it did after the 1986 amnesty, not diminish." (votesmart.org)
  • Dana Rohrabacher. Stemming Uncontrolled Illegal Immigration. 12 May 2004. "Mr. Speaker, I rise to alert my colleagues to a vote that will be taken on the floor of this Congress next Tuesday. It is a vote that will mark a turning point for our country or will reflect a continued unwillingness by America's elected officials to do anything to protect us from the greatest threat to our national safety and well-being. What am I talking about? Next Tuesday, there will be a vote on legislation that I have offered, H.R. 3722, which will attempt to protect us from a major decline in the quality of life and the quality of our health care due to the uncontrolled onslaught of illegal immigrants into our country and into our hospitals and emergency rooms. If left unchecked, illegal immigration will destroy the quality of life for many of our people [¦] This is not a back-burner issue. It goes to the heart of what America will be like tomorrow and, in some cases, it deals with a crisis of today. Yet, elected officials have remained silent about illegal immigration. Why? The American people need to ask themselves that question, because it is clear that the overwhelming number of the American people are troubled and enormously concerned about this onslaught of this uncontrolled, massive flow of illegal immigration into the United States." (votesmart.org)
  • Dana Rohrabacher. The Bush-Kennedy Amnesty Bill. 19 June 2007. "And what threat am I talking about? It is about time that the Washington elite and the elite of America's business community understand what impact this massive flow of immigration into our society has had on the life of the American people [¦] No border protection will stop the massive flow of illegal immigrants into our country if we continue to give huge rewards, a treasure house of rewards, to those people who are coming here. Don't say that you want to strengthen the border because you really are serious about trying to stop illegal immigration if you are unwilling to cut off the benefits that are the lure, which are the magnet that bring people here."
