NoCandidate AnswerDo you support United States' combat operations in Afghanistan?

I support an immediate and responsible withdrawal of our troops from Afghanistan. It is clear that our presence isn't achieving its original mission of providing stability to the region.

YesCandidate Answerdo you support reducing defense spending?
YesCandidate Answerdo you support an income tax increase on any tax bracket?
Nodo you support reducing Medicaid spending?

NoIs balancing the budget a legislative priority?
Other or expanded principles

At a time when our nation is still recovering from the Bush recession, a myopic focus on deficit reduction and balanced budgets is the last thing our economy needs. To help revitalize our economy, we need government spending on infrastructure, job creation, education, and health care.

YesDo you support the regulation of indirect campaign contributions from corporations and unions?
Other or expanded principles

I am cosponsor of the DISCLOSE Act which would address many of the shortcomings of the Supreme Court's wrong-headed decision on Citizens United. It is wrong that corporations and other wealthy interests can funnel undisclosed sums of money into political campaigns -- all hidden from public view. Ultimately, we need to get money out of politics altogether if we are really to end the influence of special interests. I support public financing of campaigns to accomplish that goal. Unfortunately, we're not in a political place in our country where that is likely to happen soon.

YesShould individuals be required to purchase health insurance, as mandated in the 2010 Affordable Care Act?

Without having everyone in the health insurance pool, it is impossible to guarantee affordable, quality health insurance. That is because people will avoid purchasing coverage until they are sick or injured and need that coverage. Insurance works because those of us who are healthy help offset the costs of those who need medical care. Ensuring everyone is in the system is critical to making health reform viable.

Please explain in a total of 100 words or less, your top two or three priorities if elected. If they require additional funding for implementation, please explain how you would obtain this funding.

I have been honored to serve California's East Bay in Congress and want to continue that work. I am committed to putting people first: Working to protect Medicare and Social Security; ending the Afghanistan war and consistently advocating diplomacy over military force; guaranteeing a quality education for every child; protecting our civil liberties; preserving our environment; and guaranteeing affordable health care to every American. There is much work to be done in all these areas and I am eager to continue pursuing these goals.
