Vote Smart's Research

  • "America needs an energy policy that works with and for the private sector to limit our dependence on foreign energy sources while ensuring a safe environment. Cap and trade has no place here. It is a shell game, which will jeopardize the economic viability of our nation. And it will do nothing to improve the environment. It is merely a pretext for government to take over yet another part of the economy -- this time, the energy sector. But there are a number of ways to make us more energy independent and also reduce risks to the environment without shackling business and manufacturing and killing jobs. I am in favor of incentives for developing renewable energy sources such as solar and wind. I also support drilling for oil and gas. And I fully endorse drilling for natural gas in New York State's Marcellus Shale formation, which can be done away from the watersheds that supply New York City and the Syracuse area with water. Developing this source not only will provide us with energy, it also will generate revenue and create jobs in the state. I also support developing nuclear energy. Worldwide, nuclear energy has proven to be safe and cost-efficient. The time has come to continue developing nuclear energy in New York State. Such commonsense measures will ensure we have the energy we need for a thriving economy and a clean environment." (votesmart.org)
