  • Mike Pompeo. Pompeo Statement on Vote to Pass Three-Week CR. 17 March 2011. "I want a long-term solution that gets our financial house in order, defunds Obamacare and stops federal funding of abortion. Republicans are working toward each of these objectives." (www.votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. H Amdt 95. 112th Congress. Prohibiting Use of Federal Funds For Planned Parenthood. Mike Pompeo voted Yea on 02/18/2011. (votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Issue Position: Traditional Values. 24 January 2012. "Mike Pompeo knows that a person and a nation are best judged by how they treat the most vulnerable. And that's one reason why Mike Pompeo is a strong pro-life advocate. You won't hear Mike demagogue this issue, rather you will see him working to ensure that fewer and fewer abortions are performed in this country." (www.votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Pompeo Votes to Support Life. 15 February 2011. "Today, Rep. Mike Pompeo (R-KS) voted to prohibit federal funds for abortion by voting for committee passage of HR 358, the Protect Life Act, in the Energy and Commerce Committee. [¦] 'I'm proud to have made my first recorded vote in Committee a vote to protect the sanctity of life by banning the use of federal funds for abortion. House Democrats were wrong to incorporate the allowance of taxpayer money for abortion within Obamacare last spring.'" (www.votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Issue Position: Life. 24 January 2012. "Pompeo stands 100% Pro-Life; Always has, always will. [¦] Mike believes life begins at conception and ends at natural death. He has great respect for human life on all instances with no exceptions." (www.votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. HR 3. 112th Congress. Prohibiting Taxpayer Funding of Abortion. Mike Pompeo voted Yea on 05/04/2011. (votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Providing for Consideration of H.R. 358, Protect Life Act. 13 October 2011. "Kansas has long been on the front lines of defending life, and I join most other Kansans in acknowledging that life begins at conception. Nearly all Kansans understand that Federal taxpayer dollars should never be used for abortions." (www.votesmart.org)

  • Mike Pompeo. H Con Res 28. 112th Congress. Removing Troops from Afghanistan. Mike Pompeo voted Nay on 03/17/2011. (votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Issue Position: Afghanistan. 26 January 2012. "While I am pleased that the president has now finally announced his Afghanistan strategy and a troop level increase, it remains inexcusable that he took so long to do so. It is concerning too, that, after months of policy briefings and back and forth, he has chosen not to provide the full level of resources and national commitment that our fighters on the ground deserve and that General McChrystal said were needed to maximize the chance of success. The lack of decisive action -- coupled with talk of exit ramps and the telegraphing of potential deadlines -- serves to give aid and comfort to our enemies, to create at least some level of doubt as to our resolve among our allies and, worse yet, unforgivably fails to provide the total commitment of our national means to our servicemen in the field." (www.votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. POMPEO: "I Am Very Concerned that President Obama has Placed Political Expediency Over Experienced Military Judgment." 22 June 2011. Over the past 10 years our troops in Afghanistan have taken the fight to the terrorists. They have performed with distinction and honor. Given the tremendous gains made by our troops, at the terrible expense of many young American lives lost, it is evident that our mission in Afghanistan is starting to wind down. The Afghan security forces are improving on a daily basis and will eventually be able to ensure terrorists do not regain control of their nation. While I agree a drawdown of our troops in Afghanistan is necessary, I am very concerned that President Obama has placed political expediency over experienced military judgment." (www.votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Pompeo Responds to President Obama's Speech on Iraq. 1 September 2010. "We face an even more difficult situation in Afghanistan. It's my hope that as the next Congressman from the 4th District of Kansas, I'll be able to help make sure our soldiers have the resources they need to complete the mission there -- and help take care of our heroes when they come home." • Mike Pompeo. Department of Defense Appropriations Act, 2013. 18 July 2012. "Mr. Chairman, I rise to strike the Rapid Innovation Fund and save the taxpayers over $250 million. As a veteran, I know how important it is that we use every single dollar that goes to our Department of Defense in an intelligent way [¦] I urge my colleagues to reject this effort. First of all, the Pentagon, as I said, never asked for this money. Four DOD agencies declined an invitation to even participate in the fund. There is clearly no one in the military clamoring for what is essentially a slush fund. With sequestration looming, now is the time to make tough choices, not to add $250 million of wasteful spending. We must focus our very scarce resources on validated military requirements [¦] The DOD base budget is well over $500 billion--built through a time-honored and trusted process to ensure the needs of our warfighters. This fund, however, is completely outside of this process and therefore advances projects that have not been validated and are not proven in this same manner [¦] As a Congress, we have to be willing to make tough choices--certainly in our DOD budget. But this one isn't even tough. We can't just throw good money in the hole and hope it helps our Nation's defense [¦] I just say to the chairman, I'm not urging anyone to rush out and spend this money. I'm urging this money to stay in the pockets of the taxpayers because the Department of Defense has not asked for it. All of the things that have been spoken to, these good ideas, I was a small business owner. I made airplane parts for 10 years. I don't want anybody to rush out and spend the money. I want to leave it in the taxpayers' pockets, where the Department of Defense believes it should be." (votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Issue Position: Military and Veterens. 1 January 2012. "As a graduate of the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and former Army officer, I am committed to providing for a strong national defense and ensuring our Armed Forces have the support and resources they need to defend our nation. We can afford a strong national defense; however, our nation's tax dollars must be spent wisely. Uncovering and exposing misuses of taxpayers' money should be the goal of all Members of Congress--and that applies to the area of defense spending, too." (votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Video: Pompeo Amendment to H.R. 1 “ C.R. 15 February 2011. "There is no one who's come to congress as a member of this new freshman class who believes more strongly in making sure we have a strong national defense. It's for that reason that I move to reduce spending in that budget by $502 million dollars with the amendment that I am proposing. This $502 million dollars is spread among various procurement and research and innovation programs, and it is money that was not requested by the Department of Defense." (www.youtube.com)
  • Mike Pompeo. Issue Position: A Strong National Defense. 27 January 2012. "Mike Pompeo will use his background to ensure that Congress provides our servicemen and women every resource they need to protect our freedom. It's more important than ever that we do not waver from the commitment to ensure that our military has the tools to not only do the job, but to do it right." (www.votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Video: Rep. Mike Pompeo - Newsletter Message. 8 April 2011. "Tonight, that vote, reducing spending by this year alone by $78.5 billion dollars also allowed our troops to get funded. As a successful businessman, Mike understands that the best way to stimulate our economy and provide more jobs is to lower the burden that taxes place on our families and businesses. • Mike Pompeo. Issue Position: Government Spending. 24 January 2012. Now, more than ever we need to restore fiscal responsibility to the federal government. Unless we are committed to reducing the size and cost of government, then we will see government continue to grow out of control. Mike Pompeo is a committed economic conservative who believes in smaller, more efficient government that lives within its means just like you and your family do. As our next Congressman, Mike Pompeo will fight wasteful pork barrel spending, oppose new government programs that we cannot afford, and fight for the common sense principles of limited government and frugality." • Mike Pompeo. The Wichita Eagle - Mike Pompeo: Curb spending, debt. 20 February 2011. "We can grow our economy by reining in runaway government spending. Small businesses in Kansas and across the country will regain the incentive to grow and invest in America. By unfettering the national entrepreneurial spirit, our local and national economy will flourish once more." (www.votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Letter to Barack Obama. 10 August 2011. "As you know, the credit rating agency Standard & Poor's (S&P) recently took the unprecedented step of downgrading the U.S. government's long-term sovereign credit rating from "AAA' to "AA+.' This decision to overturn our top credit rating, which we have maintained for 70 years, means our credit rating is now lower than that of Liechtenstein and on par with Belgium and New Zealand. Americans deserve better than that. That is why the undersigned are asking that you come forward with your plan for an additional $2 trillion in specific spending cuts in order to restore our "AAA' credit rating." (votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Congressman Pompeo Reacts to State of the Union Speech. 25 January 2011. "My freshman colleagues and I realize that the American people sent us to Congress, in large part, to put our fiscal house back in order. They understand, as we do, that prosperity and job growth is not manufactured by government spending or increased government intervention. It is created by hard-working people, small businesses and the time-tested entrepreneurial spirit that fosters success within our nation." (www.votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Pompeo Votes 'No' on Debt Limit Hike. 31 May 2011. "I voted no on raising the debt ceiling. No to more debt without a change in behavior. No to increasing the credit card limit when the Obama Administration has zero commitment to reducing the unsustainable rate of spending. No to business as usual in Washington, D.C." • Mike Pompeo. Education. 30 August 2012. "As both a parent and a former small business owner, I understand that our schools must be strong and offer an environment for students to learn and develop. This goal is best achieved when school decisions are made at the state and local level. Parents and legal guardians must be empowered to have a direct impact on their own children's education. No one knows what's best for your children better than you"as a parent"do. In those few places where the federal government may have a role in strengthening education, I am committed to working with my colleagues to ensure our children are afforded every opportunity for academic success. Congress must tear down the bureaucratic roadblocks that our educators face and strive to guarantee our educational programs are both effective and efficient. Whether parents choose to home school, send their children to a private or parochial school, or take advantage of public education, the federal government should not be a hinder them." I think the same thing is true in our school system. I'd certainly advocate the use of vouchers. Indeed I have advocated vouchers. [¦] not only should they be able to go to the school of their choice but some parents would choose to school their children at home. I think thats entirely appropriate that the parents make that decision [¦] I'd certainly be an advocate for far more choice [¦] leave that decision to the parents" to the question: "Do you support allowing parents to use vouchers to send their children to any public, private, or religious school?" • Mike Pompeo. Rep. Pompeo Counters President's Oil Attack. 26 January 2011. "Across the country, oil and gas companies are faced with costly and uncertain permitting procedures that are hampering current output and having long-term implications for U.S. oil and gas production. Most visibly, the Administration's nonsensical moratorium on offshore drilling is costing Americans more jobs. [¦] Let me be clear: I oppose all corporate welfare for preferred energy industries and pet projects. Instead, I support an "All of the above' energy plan that uses a market-determined combination of all energy sources: coal, oil, natural gas, nuclear power, hydropower, geothermal, and alternative sources (wind, solar, and biomass)." "We need to stop keeping federal lands being prohibited from a place that we can drill for oil and natural gas. We need to open up the shelves off of our coast, we need to have all energy sources available for our American consumers, and that will greatly reduce America's dependence on all energy sources coming from international sources." • Mike Pompeo. Department of the Interior, Environment, and Related Agencies Appropriations Act, 2012. 27 July 2011. "The amendment I offer today seeks to reduce by $6.2 million the amount of money available for the EPA's greenhouse gas registry program. If I had my druthers, I'd probably prefer to see the program go away. But I offer a more modest amount today. This amendment only reduces spending for this program back to the levels from 2009. Now, this is very consistent with the legislation that we're acting on, the bigger bill which takes us back to 2009. This is a program that currently stands, without this amendment, 95 percent higher than the funding for the greenhouse gas registry in 2009. I think we can all agree that we weren't spending too little money in 2009 regulating greenhouse gases in America." (www.votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. HR 910. 112th Congress. Energy Tax Prevention Act. Mike Pompeo voted Yea on 04/07/2011. (votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Environmental Protection Agency's Agricultural Policies. 20 July 2011. "This administration, under the Clean Air Act, has attempted to regulate dust. Now, I don't know about folks that live out further this way, but in Kansas, on a dry day like today when it's 110 degrees, there's a little bit of dust when you drive your truck down the road. Yet they want to say, no, that's a regulated particulate matter. Where's the common sense? [¦] We've seen what they've tried to do with greenhouse gas regulation as well. We saw this body respond by not giving the President cap-and-trade, and I'm thankful for that. But we've now get the Environmental Protection Agency that's trying to do the same through regulatory fiat. And now the Department of Transportation is chiming in as well, trying to regulate trucks, farm equipment under rules that are normally intended for cross country truckers and trying to regulate them in the same way, putting an additional burden on the agricultural community that has been operating their farm equipment in south central Kansas in an incredibly safe way for decades. I hope that this administration will reconsider. We cannot continue to drive costs. We cannot continue to regulate the Kansas agricultural community. We cannot harass it into its leaving our country. We know this is important. If we drive up the cost of food, we'll drive up inflation. That's good for no one." (www.votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Rep. Pompeo Hails Historic House Vote to Cut $100 Billion in Spending. 20 February 2011. "I promised voters to get spending under control. Now that I'm in Congress, I have been happy to bring forward amendments to help stop out-of-control spending. This week I saved taxpayers over $8.4 Million by rolling back the EPA's greenhouse gas registry, not only reducing spending, but taking a first step in reining in the EPA." (www.votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. The Hill - Earth Day 41 Years Later: A New Crisis. 22 April 2011. "EPA has also exploited global warming hysteria, engaging in an unprecedented power grab from Congress by unilaterally regulating greenhouse gases. By willfully misinterpreting the 2007 Supreme Court Case Massachusetts v. EPA, and clearly ignoring congressional intent, the EPA will add a costly and burdensome new regulation to 1.2 million businesses that will do nothing to improve actual air quality. [...] We should take time on Earth Day 2011 to talk about real environmental protection. Let's start by ceasing to treat industry like an adversary that needs to be defeated. We can protect the environment if we work together as a nation and propose common sense workable solutions, not EPA power grabs based on anti-fossil fuel ideology." (www.votesmart.org)

"I applaud the House for taking up H.R. 822, the National Right-to-Carry Reciprocity Act. As a veteran and a strong defender of the Second Amendment, I encourage all of my colleagues to support me in this important piece of legislation. I'm profoundly disappointed, but, frankly, not surprised, that this administration is joining the United Nations in crafting this dangerous treaty designed to curtail our Second Amendment rights. [¦] The Senate should not ratify this treaty. We must never turn our national sovereignty over to anyone, most especially the United Nations. As a former soldier who dearly loves his M250 caliber machine gun and loves his firearms as a civilian as well, I know that we have that right. We've got to stand up and protect it, and I urge my colleagues in the Senate not to ratify this treaty." (www.votesmart.org)

  • Mike Pompeo. Pompeo Praises Federal Judge's Decision Striking Down ObamaCare. 31 January 2011. It is also a victory for all Americans, who will benefit from doing away with this costly and misguided piece of legislation. From the start, I've said this law was unconstitutional and that this job-destroying policy was the wrong direction for Kansas and the entire country. • Mike Pompeo. Letter to Goodluck Jonathan, Nigerian President. 30 April 2012. "We write to express our grave concerns about the ongoing insurgency by Boko Haram, the Nigerian based terrorist organization that has killed an estimated 510 people in 2011 and as many as 160 this past January. While Boko Haram is largely based in northern Nigeria, we believe that a push south through Jos, could threaten your capital of Abuja, thereby destabilizing your country and potentially the region as a whole [¦] We believe that developing a comprehensive strategy of rooting out corruption at the highest levels of the Nigerian government, implementing economic development plans for your northern citizens, respecting the rule of law, and formulating counterterrorism measures that compliment the increase in security funding, would be excellent steps to address the insurgency. A recent report by the United States House of Representatives Committee on Homeland Security outlined the evolution of Boko Haram. Formed in the mid-2000s, this terrorist organization has gone from utilizing archaic weapons to the more sophisticated car bombings and targeted attacks. The report further states, "Boko Haram are being trained by Al Qaeda in the Lands of the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM). They are also believed to have ties to the Somalian militant group al Shabaab." While there is little evidence that Boko Haram has reached the sophistication of Al Qaeda, we learned after the attacks on our homeland on September 11, 2001 that one must never underestimate the capabilities of those who use violence to perpetuate an ideology. We certainly recognize that aggressively targeting an insurgency is difficult, especially one like Boko Haram, that has done nothing but grow in strength in recent years. However, any alternative gives Boko Haram time to recruit new converts and develop even more deadly strategies. Your Administration can stem the tide of violence that persists in your country but the window of opportunity is closing. The United States and Nigeria enjoy a strong economic cooperation and a national security partnership. We look forward to this relationship continuing and appreciate your attention to this important matter." (votesmart.org)

With Yemen hovering on the brink of civil war, the U.S. must take real and serious steps to ensure Yemen does not fall into anarchy, allowing terrorists to pose a greater threat [¦] Yemen is of great importance to the United States, given its geopolitical significance, and it is becoming a primary base of operations for Al Qaeda in the Arab Peninsula (AQAP). It is essential for Yemen to remain a focal point for U.S. anti-terrorism efforts. In 2000, the U.S. Navy destroyer USS Cole was attacked in a terrorist effort planned by Al Qaeda, which killed 17 U.S. servicemen and wounded 39 others. Nearly a decade later, both the Christmas Day bombing plot of 2009 and the November 2010 AQAP plot to use cargo planes to hide parcel bombs to attack the U.S. had roots in Yemen. The radical American-born cleric Anwar al Awlaki, who is linked to these terrorist plots, is currently hiding in Yemen. AQAP continues to be a critical threat to our nation's security, and our policies need to reflect the urgency of this threat. From what began as clashes in the capital, three major flash points have erupted. In addition to continued street fighting in the capital, government troops are shooting down protestors in Taiz, and a battle rages against Al Qaeda and other Islamic militants in Zinjibar. As Yemen remains divided by political turmoil, AQAP is becoming stronger. In addition, Yemen is also experiencing an increased Iranian influence with the Houthi rebels -- a serious threat as Iran seeks to pursue regional hegemony." (votesmart.org)
  • Mike Pompeo. Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2011. 12 May 2011. "I do not sit on this committee, but I did have the opportunity to serve in uniform our country. We witnessed what happened in the capture of the world's greatest terrorist, and we saw the great military feats which took place, but we also know all of the enormous work that our intelligence community did to make that happen. [¦] So I want to applaud the efforts of the Intelligence Committee. I want to urge all of my colleagues to support this legislation and the intelligence community, which keeps everyone in America safe." (www.votesmart.org)
