Billy Long's Issue Positions (Political Courage Test)

Office: U.S. House (MO) - District 7, Republican
Project Vote Smart does not permit the use of its name or programs in any campaign activity, including advertising, debates, and speeches.
Billy Long has refused to provide voters with positions on key issues covered by the 2016 Political Courage Test, despite repeated requests. Historically, candidates have failed to complete our test due to the advice they receive from their parties and advisors and out of fear of negative attack ads.

What is the Political Courage Test?

Issue Positions

In response to the increasing unwillingness of candidates to answer issue questions, Project Vote Smart has researched Presidential and Congressional candidates' public records to determine candidates' likely responses on certain key issues. These issue positions, from the year 2016, are provided below as a courtesy to voters.

Pro-life Inferred Answer Abortion: Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation? View Citations

Vote Smart's Research

  • "Today is a victory for the pro-life cause and our ongoing battle against abortion. As Americans, it is our duty to provide ample opportunity for life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. Abortion is an ugly approach to rob the prospect of life from the innocent and block liberty before the chance is even given. I am proud to cast my vote in favor of protecting the unborn." http://votesmart.org/public-statement/975294/long-casts-pro-life-vote-on-anti-abortion-bill (votesmart.org)

No Inferred Answer Education: Do you generally support requiring states to adopt federal education standards? View Citations

Vote Smart's Research

  • "Washington bureaucrats who have never set foot in Missouri are placing costly and ineffective burdens on our school systems and not solving any of the problems. The challenges our educators face in Southwest Missouri are different from those faced in Massachusetts or California." http://votesmart.org/public-statement/936858/newsletter-longs-short-report-importance-of-education#.VZ7GenUVhHw (votesmart.org)
  • "I have always believed that local school officials and parents are much better suited to know what is best for their students, not the federal government. Yes Inferred Answer Energy: Do you support building the Keystone XL pipeline? View Citations

Vote Smart's Research

  • "The Keystone XL pipeline project represents what should have at least partially relieved these workers from this recession's hardships. But, this commonsense solution continues to be ignored for seemingly-political reasons. Keystone XL must be completed. I refuse to play politics with the American worker's livelihood and won't stop pushing for this project that allows us to buy oil from friends that like us, rather than enemies that don't." http://votesmart.org/public-statement/1017307/longs-short-report-still-waiting-for-keystone-seven-years-later/ (votesmart.org)

No Inferred Answer Energy: Do you support government funding for the development of renewable energy (e.g. solar, wind, thermal)? View Citations

Vote Smart's Research

  • "We need an all-of-the-above approach to solve this problem. We haven't built an oil refinery in this country in over 35 years. We need more oil, gas, coal and nuclear energy production combined with more wind, solar, hydropower, and geothermal energies. This will lower prices, create jobs, reduce our dependence on foreign oil, and strengthen our national security." http://votesmart.org/public-statement/625329/issue-position-energy-and-environment (votesmart.org)
  • "The government should not be in the business of choosing winners and losers. • "Rather it is a one year of relief for farmers, ranchers, and rural businesses from potentially crippling regulations from the EPA. No Inferred Answer Marriage: Do you support same-sex marriage? View Citations

Vote Smart's Research

  • "I am disappointed the Supreme Court has ruled to uphold same-sex marriage. This decision is troubling as it will overturn voter-imposed state bans on the practice, such as in Missouri. I believe this decision directly removes and marginalizes the will of the people. It undermines the very democratic principle America is founded upon and deprives states of their Tenth Amendment rights. I join many southwest Missourians in expressing frustration with the Court’s judgment, as it violates the traditional meaning of marriage." http://long.house.gov/press-releases/long-statement-on-supreme-court-samesex-marriage-decision/ (long.house.gov)
