New Hampshire State Legislative Election 2014 Political Courage Test

Pro-choice a) Do you generally support pro-choice or pro-life legislation?
No b) Should abortions be illegal after the first trimester of pregnancy?
Yes c) Should abortion be legal when the pregnancy resulted from incest or rape?
Yes d) Should abortion be legal when the life of the woman is endangered?
No e) Do you support requiring parental notification before an abortion is performed on a minor?
No f) Do you support requiring parental consent before an abortion is performed on a minor?
No g) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for abortion procedures?
No h) Do you support the prohibition of public funds for organizations that perform abortions?
I believe the state has no role in telling a woman what she should do with her body. If the state can force a woman to carry a child, it can mandate she must reproduce. Reproduction is a personal decision. I would not have an abortion. I just believe it is a woman's personal choice and the state should have no role in the decision. I have seen situations where a minor's father is the father of the baby she is carrying. Asking such a man for permission to have an abortion is not likely to turn out well.

No f) Reducing benefits for Medicaid recipients
NH citizens need to prioritize the needs for state funding. I propose the creating of a blue ribbon panel of all stakeholders to develop such a priority list and to make recommendations for funding. The NH Advantage isn't, and hurts our economy. We are already slipping on several competitive assessments. This would be a massive undertaking, but could produce a consensus about our needs and fiscal priorities. A broad based tax of some kind is only one possible option.

a) Do you support limits on the following types of contributions for state candidates?

Yes 1) Individual
Yes 2) Political Action Committee
Yes 3) Corporate
Yes 4) Political Party
Yes b) Should candidates for state office be encouraged to meet voluntary spending limits?
Yes c) Do you support requiring full and timely disclosure of campaign finance information?
Yes d) Do you support the use of an independent AND/OR bipartisan commission for redistricting?
No e) Do you support requiring a government-issued photo identification in order to vote at the polls?
Redistricting as currently practiced is a joke. A non partisan redistricting committee that insures that every vote counts and does not favor one party over the other is a real need in NH. Right now it favors the party in power when redistricting must be done.
No a) Do you support capital punishment for certain crimes?
Yes b) Do you support alternatives to incarceration for certain non-violent offenders, such as mandatory counseling or substance abuse treatment?
Yes c) Do you support legalizing the possession of small amounts of marijuana?
No d) Should a minor accused of a violent crime be prosecuted as an adult?
No e) Should a minor who sends sexually-explicit or nude photos by cell phone face criminal charges?
Yes f) Do you support the enforcement of federal immigration laws by state and local police?
g) Federal law supercedes state law. Local and state police must enforce federal law. It is not an option.
No a) Do you support reducing government regulations on the private sector?
Yes b) Do you support increased state funding for job-training programs that re-train displaced workers?
Yes c) Do you support expanding access to unemployment benefits?
Yes d) Do you support providing financial incentives to the private sector for the purpose of job creation?
Yes e) Do you support government spending as a means of promoting economic growth?
No f) Do you support providing direct financial assistance to homeowners facing foreclosure?
Yes g) Do you support an increase of the minimum wage?
f) There may be a need here but the question is too broad. When a bank or mortgage company is guilty of fraud then there may in fact be a reason for the government to step in and assist a home owner. As long as a bank or mortgage company is "too big to fail" and is taking advantage of a small time homeowner there should be some recourse. Cirumstances definitely can alter cases. "Yes" or "no" here is misleading.
Yes a) Do you support the national Common Core State Standards initiative?
No b) Do you support a merit pay system for teachers?
Yes c) Is the tenure process for public school teachers producing effective teachers?
No d) Should parents be allowed to use vouchers to send their children to any school?
No e) Do you support state funding for charter schools?
Yes f) Do you support the state government providing college students with financial aid?
Yes g) Should illegal immigrants who graduate from New Hampshire high schools be eligible for in-state tuition at public universities?
a) The concept of CCSS is valid. Standards are not curriculum and states can write thier own curriculum to meet local needs. The problem is Washington tying CCSS to Race to the Top funding. That polluted the whole process and caused trouble. We seem to be doing pretty well in NH but not all states are. CCSS is NOT a federal curriculum.
Yes a) Do you support state funding for the development of alternative energy?
No b) Do you support state funding for the development of traditional domestic energy sources (e.g. coal, natural gas, oil)?
Yes c) Do you support state funding for improvements to New Hampshire's energy infrastructure?
Yes d) Do you support state funding for open space preservation?
Yes e) Do you support government regulations of greenhouse gas emissions?
c) I do not support Northern Pass towers being built over the summits of our mountains. If they can bury the lines in Vermont and Maine, they can bury them here too.
Yes a) Do you support restrictions on the purchase and possession of guns?
Yes b) Should background checks be required on gun sales between private citizens at gun shows?
No c) Should citizens be allowed to carry concealed guns?
Yes d) Should a license be required for gun possession?
A "well regulated militia" is not every Tom Dick and Jane with a loaded gun in the night stand. Statistically you are more likely to shoot a family member than an intruder. The arming of America is sowing the wind and we are beginning to reap the whirlwind.
Yes a) Do you support a universally-accessible, publicly-administered health insurance option?
Yes b) Do you support expanding access to health care through commercial health insurance reform?
Yes c) Do you support interstate health insurance compacts?
Yes d) Do you support Medicaid expansion under the Affordable Care Act?
Yes e) Do you support requiring individuals to purchase health care insurance?
Yes f) Do you support monetary limits on damages that can be collected in malpractice lawsuits?
Yes g) Do you support allowing doctors to prescribe marijuana to their patients for medicinal purposes?
Quality health care should be a right, not a function of income.
Yes a) Do you support same-sex marriage?
Yes b) Do you support the inclusion of sexual orientation in New Hampshire's anti-discrimination laws?
Yes c) Do you support the inclusion of gender identity in New Hampshire's anti-discrimination laws?
d) Other or expanded principles:
i believe we must increase funding to support our public university system and public schools. We need to raise the minimum wage. We need to support upgrades and improvement of our infrastructure. I support a blue ribbon commission to look at all sources of revenue, consult with all stake holders and come up with recommendations for state budget priorities including funding sources. We must stop lurching from biennium to biennium and focus on the long term fiscal health of NH. The NH Advantage is a fraud that hurts NH in the long run.
