Issue Positions

In response to the increasing unwillingness of candidates to answer issue questions, Project Vote Smart has researched Presidential and Congressional candidates' public records to determine candidates' likely responses on certain key issues. • Jon Barela. 2010. Campaign for Liberty Candidate Survey. Responded YES to the question: "Indicate the tax cuts you are willing to vote for: Estate Tax" (www.campaignforliberty.com)
  • Jon Barela signed the American Family Business Institute No Death Tax Pledge. (www.nodeathtax.org)
  • Jon Barela. Issue Position: Taxes and Spending. "Jon Barela wants to stop the wasteful spending spree in Washington and believes the rate of government expansion is out of control. Sometimes government is the problem and not the solution. It is time for our elected officials to be held accountable and to understand that sinking our nation further into debt only creates more problems, not solutions. Increasing taxes on hard-working New Mexicans is unfair. It is time for the government to control their spending and make cutbacks rather then increase taxes. One of the first steps Jon Barela took upon making his announcement to run for Congress was to sign the Americans for Tax Reform Taxpayer Protection Pledge and Jon intends to honor that pledge in Congress." • Jon Barela. One Year After Stimulus Passage, New Mexicans Still Looking for Work. So Called stimulus anniversary.pdf. 17 February 2010. “My opponent, Martin Heinrich, supported the so-called stimulus bill, promising in January of last year that it would create jobs and provide 'swift economic relief' for New Mexicans. Unfortunately, on the most important issue facing our state - high unemployment - Heinrich hasn't delivered. Instead, showing a total lack of independence, he has marched in lock-step behind his party leadership as they have pushed for higher taxes, dramatically increased spending, and supported a costly and distracting domestic agenda that increases the government's role in our daily lives. That's not a recipe for job creation." (jonbarela.com)
  • Jon Barela. Employment Numbers Show Languishing Private Sector Job Outlook. 4 June 2010. "Martin Heinrich and Washington politicians are failing to put Americans back to work. Job creation requires support for small businesses and a thriving economy, neither of which are being generated by Congress today. Martin Heinrich's economic policies involve raising taxes, increasing government spending, and growing the national debt by $5 billion per day! An economy doesn't thrive under those conditions, and jobs aren't going to be created that way either." (votesmart.org)
  • Jon Barela. Heinrich, Democrat Majority Won't Pass 2010 Budget. 22 June 2010. "Unfortunately, Martin Heinrich has played a starring role in advancing Nancy Pelosi's liberal agenda of high taxes, runaway spending, and skyrocketing debt - which has put our nation's economy on such unstable footing. He's failed to lead, and failed to be independent. In Congress, I will provide the leadership necessary to stop this borrow-tax-spend agenda in its tracks. We'll live within our means, we'll create jobs, and we'll set a new course of fiscal responsibility that is long overdue." (votesmart.org)
  • Jon Barela. Issue Position: Jobs and Economy. "Small businesses are the foundation of our economy and their hard work and innovation should be rewarded and not penalized. During these tough and uncertain economic times the last thing Congress needs to do is place more burden on individuals and small businesses. Allowing individuals and small businesses to keep more of their money will allow them the opportunity to invest and spend and improve the current economic downturn. Increased taxes will compel small businesses to reduce their workforce when our nation is already experiencing high rates of unemployment. Conversely, providing small businesses tax incentives will allow them to increase their workforce." (votesmart.org)

  • Jon Barela. Issue Position: Education/Workforce Development. "A re-direction of educational resources and priorities are required to better prepare our students for job opportunities. In New Mexico, there is an educational crisis, especially with respect to Hispanic dropout rates and the growing achievement gap. Families and parents must be encouraged to engage in their childrens' education. Programs such as "Learn and Earn", which reward families and students for academic performance show very impressive results. Using some Title I funds for such programs are in order. Other successful models include ENLACE's "Walk and Knock" program. Jon Barela would also support a re-direction of resources for family centers and "Dean of Families" at certain schools. Barela has spent many years in the community working on behalf of educational programs. He knows what works and what does not." (votesmart.org)

  • Jon Barela. 2010. Campaign for Liberty Candidate Survey. Responded YES to the question: "Will you oppose any attempt to nationalize our health care system, including any sort of public option for insurance?"
  • Jon Barela signed the Contract from America. "Defund, repeal and replace the recently passed government-run health care with a system that actually makes health care and insurance more affordable by enabling a competitive, open, and transparent free-market health care and health insurance system that isn't restricted by state boundaries." (www.thecontract.org)
  • Jon Barela. Barela Decries Political Maneuvers on Health Care, Urges His Supporters to Call Heinrich. 17 March 2010. "As you read this, Nancy Pelosi is planning yet another shady maneuver, this time called the “Slaughter Solution,” to ram through an unpopular health care bill that Americans have rejected time and time again. First, they tried the “Cornhusker Kickback” and other sweetheart deals with taxpayer money to buy votes for the bill. Then, they held a series of closed-door meetings where backroom deals were cut away from public view. When that didn’t work, they embraced “reconciliation” as a way to shut off debate and ignore the will of the people. And now, under the “Slaughter Solution,” the House would basically pass the Senate’s flawed and costly health care bill without requiring any House member to actually vote on it! The damage would be done, so to speak, without the fingerprints to prove it… This would be comical if the situation wasn’t so serious. Think about it…Washington politicians are trying to convince the American people that this bill is the right solution to our health care problems, but when push comes to shove, they aren’t even willing to vote for it themselves!" (jonbarela.com)
  • Jon Barela. The Process of Passing Health Bill Shameful. Process of Passing Health Bill Shameful.pdf. 4 April 2010. "While I respect Mr. Heinrich and his office, I have a fundamentally different point of view of how to reform health care and reject such a "government knows best" attitude. The bill will increase the cost and decrease the quality of health care in the United States, and it was passed using a thoroughly non-transparent process by representatives who appear to be woefully out of touch with our greatest needs and concerns. This health care legislation, with a price tag between $940 billion and $2.5 trillion, reflects the misguided priorities that are dominating Washington today. The bill contains a whopping $569 billion in job-killing tax increases and creates a new marriage penalty with new income and investment taxes. It cuts Medicare by approximately $500 billion, a significant portion coming from the Medicare Advantage program." (jonbarela.com)
