k) Eliminate all federal education standards and testing requirements for K-12 students (No Child Left Behind).
There are some great ideas in No Child Left Behind. But the testing methodology steers many teachers to teach to the test, thereby narrowing the breadth of education to just those areas likely to be found on the test. With proper funding, NCLB has potential to be a great endeavour for our children. Without necessary funds, it will miss the mark. |

f) Illegal immigrants should have to return to their countries of origin before being considered for citizenship.
X | g) Illegal immigrants should be given a pathway to citizenship.
X | h) Support merit-based visas over family-based visas.
Eliminate automatic citizenship of children born in the US to illegal immigrants. I am all for letting productive working immigrants stay here, but they have to do it legally. Not necessarily sent back, but given a track to citizenship, provided they pay taxes, stay out of trouble, etc.. These workers do plenty of jobs most Americans will not, or don't want to do. |

I suggest that it is very near time for Iraq to take their country back, as well as the responsibility for it. We should never have been in there in the first place, but 5 years of occupation is enough. Let the Saudis and other neighbors with an interest in a free Iraq start providing the dollars and troops if they deem it necessary. They can hire Blackwater if they wish. As long as the US is over there, tensions will be high, gas prices will stay high, and we will never be out from under our foreign oil dependency. |
Indicate which principles you support (if any) regarding national security.

No | e) Do you support pre-emptive military strikes against countries deemed to be a threat to United States national security?
No | f) Do you support the creation of a federal identification card system?
No | g) Do you support long-term use of National Guard troops to supplement the armed forces in assignments overseas?
Undecided | h) Should the United States expand its missile defense shield?
Our National Guard would better serve the people of the US if the Guard was used to supplement the Border Patrol in providing secure borders between the US and Canada/Mexico. They would also be available for national emergencies and disasters on the home front, rather than supplementing our regular forces in unnecessary actions half a world away. |

Same sex marriage is a state to state issue; I support letting each state determine how it handles the marriage issue, rather than the Federal Government taking a stand. |
Indicate which principles you support (if any) regarding Social Security.
X | a) Allow workers to invest a portion of their payroll tax in private accounts that they manage themselves.
b) Ensure the viability of Social Security by increasing the payroll tax.
c) Decrease benefits paid to retirees.
X | d) Support proportional increases of Social Security benefits based on the cost of living index.
X | e) Raise the retirement age for individual eligibility to receive full Social Security benefits.
Without a major overhaul, Social Security will go bankrupt. Many paying into the system today may never see a benefit. We need to continue to provide benefits to those who are dependent on SS for their livelihood in retirement, but decrease benefits with each younger age group until it is either a viable longterm benefits program, or until it is dissolved. But do not keep our retired workers and those nearing retirement from the benefits they have been promised. |
Indicate which principles you support (if any) regarding welfare and poverty.
X | a) Require welfare recipients to spend at least 40 hours a week in a combination of work and training programs.
X | b) Continue to give states and local governments flexibility in and responsibility for welfare programs through federal block grants.
X | c) Support housing assistance for welfare recipients.
d) Abolish all federal welfare programs.
Workfare programs are best for giving value to the benefits received, by providing work in return for a check. Much like the old WPA, a workfare program provides a sense of worth to the recipient. I would like to see workfare programs sponsored by corporate America in return for tax incentives, so the government would not have to create a larger bureaucracy to oversee the programs. |
1: Begin preparations to remove our military from Iraq. This will save money as well as lives. Use our military forces to keep America safe back home, but always prepared to fight anytime, anywhere when absolutely necessary. 2: Focus on increased alternative energy solutions through research and new technology. Let the energy companies avoid any windfall profits taxes by helping provide funding for unrelated, third party startups and small businesses to pursue technological breakthroughs that could make us energy independent. 3: An overhaul of the healthcare system. No American should be denied health benefits due to lack of dollars. |
