What is the Political Courage Test?

Michigan Congressional Election 2008 Political Courage Test

The Political Courage Test asks candidates which items they will support if elected. It does not ask them to indicate which items they will oppose. Through extensive research of public polling data, we discovered that voters are more concerned with what candidates would support when elected to office, not what they oppose. If a candidate does not select a response to any part or all of any question, it does not necessarily indicate that the candidate is opposed to that particular item.

I would like to live in a world where there are no abortions. I do not believe that making abortion illegal will meet that goal. In my view, the best route to eliminating abortions is to address the underlying problems that cause women to have them. A woman may decide to have an abortion in the midst of a crisis pregnancy due to all manner of circumstances. In those circumstances, she should have the right to consult with her doctor, her family, her pastor or her priest, and her own conscience in making the decision about what to do.

I believe that we to sensibly redeploy a substantial number of our troops so that they may respond to the vital problems facing us in nearby Afghanistan and elsewhere. I believe that we need to leave a sufficient number of troops in Iraq through 2009 to protect Iraqi infrastructure, to minimize potential undue influence from Iran and to thwart any Sunni versus Shia violence which has been exacerbated by our presence in Iraq. When those objectives have been advanced, I believe we can fully redeploy our remaining troops.

I look forward to being part of the Congress which maintains the continued integrity of Social Security for many years to come.
