Reason for Seeking Public Office:
In 2005, I was on a citizens' committee tasked with fixing a critical problem with elections in Reno. We had three-hour lines to vote; lines that would often linger for an hour and a half after the polls were closed. I'm proud to say that working with the Registrar's Office and the Washoe County School Administration we were able to increase the number of polling places and get rid of the long lines on Election Day while protecting the rights of thousands of Nevadans. We did it all while lowering costs. That experience was one of the things that led me to run for public office. I realized that together, we can get things done and solve problems. Public service is about trying to improve the lives of middle class families here in Nevada and that's always first in my mind. It's about providing Nevadans with the opportunity to obtain the tools with which they can reach their goals and lead their lives with dignity and respect. A job, an education and the right to vote are necessary building blocks to secure what we in America believe are inalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. I've enjoyed serving as your Treasurer for seven years, but there's so much more I want to do to make our state better. As Secretary of State, I'll continue to make government transparent and accessible for all Nevadans. I will take my approach for cutting waste and streamlining operations to this new office. I am committed to making sure voting is easier and to ensuring that every legal vote counts - equally. Your vote is your voice and every voice should be heard.
I'm also running for Secretary of State to ensure that every company in America knows that there is no better place to build a business and no better workers than right here in Nevada. Licensing and registration should not be a barrier to a company's success. I will cut red tape and make it easier for companies already doing business here and for those that wish to come here. Together we can ensure integrity and efficiency in the Secretary of State's Office, making government work for Nevada families and businesses, big and small.
