Reason for Seeking Public Office:
I believe that the U.S. is at a crossroads. Over the next ten years, Utah and the United States will face unprecedented competition from around the world. As a state, we must do those things necessary to remain competitive. These include the following:
A Sustainable Energy Policy including Developing Utah's Natural Resources
We must develop our Natural resources to ease the financial burden so many are experiencing because of rising gas and food prices. A rational energy policy which allows Utah to develop our School Trust Lands will help us become less dependent on foreign nations as well as provide much needed resources for our public schools. Just as it is not wise for a person to be dependent on others so is it not wise for a nation to be dependent on others. We must look at all options including more drilling, coal, oil shale, nuclear as well cost effective conservation. We must encourage our federal leaders to stop subsidizing ethanol which is causing food prices to rise. As with most liberal policies, the poor and middle class end up suffering the most since more of their disposable income is spent as a result of ridiculous policies.
We need to make sure that government is efficient as possible. We must use taxpayers sparingly and effectively so that more money can remain in Utahns hands so they can be innovative and continue to grow the economy. I fear that just as much of the world is running away from socialism, we seem to be running full steam towards it.
The Federal Government has failed miserably to enforce our immigration laws and Utah is paying the consequences. Since the federal government has refused to address the issue, Utah must. I believe in legal immigration. Coupled with the melting pot, it has played a major role in the success of this nation. Having experienced the immigration from start to finish with my wife, I know of the sacrifices that legal immigrant have made to come to this county. As Utahns, all we ask is that people come here legally (so that the entire world has an equal opportunity, learn the language, and become American. If this does not happen, our country will be in great danger.
Private Solutions to Affordable Health Care
Other issues that I have been working on over the summer are private solutions for affordable housing so that our children will have a place to live. If the market allowed to function, the market will take care of the issue.
