Vote to adopt a conference report that requires public employers to verify the legal status of all new employees beginning on July 1, 2007. The bill also specifies that private employers cannot deduct wages paid to unauthorized employees on their taxes and that six percent of compensation paid to an individual without a correct taxpayer identification number will be withheld. The bill requires the verification of legal entry of any individual 18 or older applying for state or local public aid, except for certain benefits including emergency benefits, prenatal and postsecondary education benefits.
